NYT wins Pulitzer Prize for PH drug war report

The Times staff won the prize for global reporting for its series of stories titled "Russia's Dark Arts" that proved particularly timely previous year after US intelligence agencies concluded that Putin's government had actively tried to influence the USA presidential election in favor of Donald Trump through the hacking and release of internal Democratic Party e-mails. The photo was part of a series that portrayed the boy and his mother striving to put the boy's life back together after he survived a shooting in Chicago.

The award in editorial cartooning went to Jim Morin of The Miami Herald for work "that delivered sharp perspectives through flawless artistry, biting prose and crisp wit".

Daniel Berehulak, freelance photographer, receiving the Breaking News Photography award for reporting on the Philippines' government's deadly targeting of drug dealers and drug users.

Trump has called The Washington Post "phony" and "so false and angry", and said it publishes "inaccurate stories" and "dishonest reporting", among other insults.

The Pulitzer is a set of prizes awarded for written excellence in the fields of newspaper, magazine and online journalism, literature, and musical composition in the U.S. Joseph Pulitzer established the prize in 1917 after having made a fortune as a newspaper publisher.

King co-authored a series of stories on unsafe prescription drug combinations in 2016 that not only inspired reforms at pharmacies across the country, but also pioneered a new method for discovering fatal drug interactions.

The outlets which broke the story received $15,000 for "a distinguished example of explanatory reporting that illuminates a significant and complex subject, demonstrating mastery of the subject, lucid writing and clear presentation, using any available journalistic tool". "I'm extremely proud of the work we did and the impact it had in strengthening protections for patients".

PREMIUM TIMES, Nigeria's leading investigative platform, was the only Nigerian news organisation granted direct access to the files.

Washington Post reporter David Fahrenthold's articles "created a model for transparent journalism" and cast doubt on Mr Trump's assertions of generosity, the Pulitzer board said.

He also revealed Mr Trump's obscene comments about women on a 2005 tape. The footage rocked the White House race and prompted an apology from the then-candidate.

The New York Times won three Pulitzer Prizes this year in the categories of best feature writing, best special reporting and best breaking news photography, as journalism presented its highest honours, the media reported. "Chivers" class="local_link" target="_blank">C.J. Chivers also won the feature writing award for showing a Marine's postwar descent into violence. That prize, he said, came with $10,000 and a trip to NY.

A small-town Iowa newspaper editorial writer has won the Pulitzer Prize for taking on powerful agricultural organizations after a water utility sued the paper's home county and two others over farm pollution.
