Taipei reacts to US-China summit

Taiwan made thorough preparations ahead of a summit between U.S. President Donald Trump and his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping (習近平), and there were no surprises in the results of the just-concluded meeting between the two leaders, the Presidential Office spokesman said Saturday.
North Korea has several major anniversaries this month and often marks the occasions with major tests of military hardware.
The statement said that North Korea, which regards Syria as an ally, was not surprised that this USA military attack was a "warning to us" and that it was another example that "we have to defend ourselves against imperialist aggressions".

"It does seem to suggest that Trump is more willing to pull the trigger than Obama", said Robert Kelly, a political science professor at South Korea's Pusan National University.
"Both sides agreed that, despite the global community's warnings, if North Korea makes strategic provocations such as a nuclear tests or an ICBM launch, there should be strong additional measures in accordance with United Nations security council regulations", Kim told reporters.
U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said the U.S. military strike against Syria over its alleged use of chemical weapons was a warning to other countries including North Korea that "a response is likely" if they pose a danger.
"(Chinese) President Xi (Jinping) clearly understands, and I think agrees, that the situation has intensified and has reached a certain level of threat that action has to be taken", Tillerson told the media.
The USS Carl Vinson - controlled by the US Third Fleet in the Pacific ocean - suspended a scheduled visit to Australia and after leaving Singapore turned towards the Korean peninsula. "We feel the increased presence is necessary".
The report was followed by news that a US aircraft carrier, which was scheduled for a port call in Australia, has moved towards the Korean Peninsula amid growing concerns of a nuclear threat from North Korea.
Kim said Wu repeated China's position on the THAAD system deployment, but did not give details.
He said the meeting at Mar-a-Lago, Trump's Florida estate, had helped convince the Chinese to take action.
A USA decision to move a Navy strike group toward the Korean peninsula is a "prudent" reaction to a pattern of provocative behavior from North Korea, White House national security adviser H.R. McMaster said on Sunday.
