The Yankees delighted 46,955 fans who came out for the season opener at Yankee Stadium to watch the team grab its second consecutive win in a game that was never contested by the Tampa Bay Rays. That is the question, but who cares because this was an Opening Day that was memorable and could prove to be beneficial for the Yankees in the long run.
Pineda went 7.2 innings, giving up one run on two hits while striking out 11. And for that reason, Brian Cashman should be working the phones until midnight to find a suitor for the real "Baby" Bomber. "His changeup's good. And when he locates his fastball, it's really good". You can say Pineda has the skeptics, and his reputation for losing focus on the mound does give him that bad rap, but Monday afternoon on a day ideal for baseball, Michael Pineda got the skeptics going in another direction.
That said, Martha Stewart absolutely jinxed the hell out of Michael Pineda, and she owes him a very tasetful yet elaborate floral arrangement by way of apology. "I had just guessed slider on that pitch, and he made a mistake". How is it, for instance, that Ivan Nova can move over to the Pirates under the tutelage of Ray Searage, win ten games in half a season, and become a mainstay in the Pittsburgh rotation?
As Michael Pineda threw strike after strike and got out after out, the excitement of the home opener crowd at Yankee Stadium increased and its noise-level rose.
This plot (via Brooks Baseball), showing the results of each of Pineda's pitches, should let you know just how hard his slider was biting today.
Michael Pineda was sharp Monday afternoon and there was no other word to describe the New York Yankees righthander on Opening Day in the Bronx It was nearly perfection and for the moment erased a question as to when he will finally step up?
First pitch duties today will be handled by Yankees greats and Team USA WBC champs Joe Torre (GM), Tino Martinez (hitting coach) and Willie Randolph (coach).
This should be a signal that the Yankees are not conceding the 2017 season in any way. Also, 1B Greg Bird was sidelined with a foot issue.
