Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said on CBS News' "Face the Nation" Sunday that Mr. Trump and Jinping had "extensive discussions around the risky situation in North Korea" last week.
Meanwhile, North Korea said that USA missile strikes against a Syrian airbase on April 7 were "an unforgivable act of aggression" that showed the North's decision to develop nuclear weapons was "the right choice a million times over".
The attack took place when Trump was dining with Chinese President Xi Jinping. The missile exceeded the range of any previous sub-launched tests, in what the North's leader Kim Jong-Un hailed as the "greatest success".
"The US missile attack against Syria is a clear and intolerable act of aggression against a sovereign state and we strongly condemn it", a government official in North Korea said, as quoted by the KCNA news agency.
The "hidden motive" of Trump's air strikes on Syria was a warning to North Korea, the Chinese academic claimed.
The two leaders agreed that their first meeting, held at the seaside Mar-a-Lago resort in the USA state of Florida, was "positive and fruitful".
Tensions have been even higher than usual over the past few weeks because annual war games between the US and South Korean militaries are underway.
North Korea on Sunday condemned the United States bombing in Syria.
The Pentagon announced on Saturday that a Navy carrier strike group was moving toward the western Pacific Ocean to provide a physical presence near the Korean Peninsula.
"The number-one threat in the region continues to be North Korea, due to its reckless, irresponsible and destabilizing program of missile tests and pursuit of a nuclear weapons capability".
On Sunday, Secretary of State Rex Tillerson was asked in a TV interview if the US administration is considering any assassination plan for Kim, and said he is aware of "no such plans". "And I hope we see more along those lines", he said.
The visit will also address deploying the controversial US-built Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) to South Korea, the anti-missile system that is aimed at countering North Korea's missile threat.
Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, seeking assurances of USA protection, was an early visitor to both the White House and Trump's Florida resort Mar-a-Lago.
Meanwhile, U.S. National Security Adviser Herbert McMaster said Sunday that Trump has ordered him to prepare "a full range of options" on North Korea.

Mr Tillerson said that if other nations violate worldwide norms and become a threat to others, "at some point a response is likely to be undertaken".
Kim added the two sides agreed "an even stronger United Nations resolution" will have to be adopted in the event of additional weapons test by North Korea.
"We would like to see more results-oriented outcomes coming out of these new dialogues and fewer laundry lists", said Beijing-based Jacob Parker, vice president of China operations at the US-China Business Council, although he added that he saw the meeting as "generally positive" on commercial issues.
