Alabama GOP calls for Gov. Bentley to resign

The Alabama Republican Party Steering Committee, House Speaker Mac McCutcheon and Senate Pro Tem Del Marsh have all called for Bentley's resignation in the days since the impeachment report was released.

Yasamie August made the statement Monday morning as the House Judiciary Committee was set to begin impeachment hearings.

Alabama's Lieutenant Gov. Kay Ivey is expected to be sworn in by the acting chief justice of the Alabama Supreme Court. Jeff Sessions to be his US attorney general, it opened the US Senate seat.

Alabama Gov. Robert Bentley (R) was booked into Montgomery County Jail on Monday evening for two misdemeanor charges related to campaign finance violations. One witness before the commission claimed that Bentley used almost $9,000 in campaign funds to pay for his mistress's lawyer. And it noted that neither the governor nor his staff "meaningfully" cooperated with the investigation, which could be grounds "for his impeachment".

The commission report paints a picture of Bentley as a paranoid bully who may have misused state vehicles and ordered state law officers to cover up his relationship with top aide Rebekah Caldwell Mason.

The former first lady's chief of staff also charged that Bentley threatened her job because he believed she had helped his wife make the recordings. After the high court's ruling, the House Judiciary Committee quickly announced plans to proceed with hearings on Monday. He said she was deeply involved in budget decisions within state agencies. Lt. Gov. Ivey will succeed Bentley. Nothing improper was found, Collier said.

After tense fights with his then-wife over the alleged affair, Bentley would sometimes bolt, leaving state security scrambling to locate man they are paid to protect. She ran as a surrogate for her still-powerful husband in 1966 when he couldn't seek re-election because of term limits. "I love the people of this state from the bottom of my heart".

The agreement specifies that Bentley must surrender campaign funds totaling $36,912 within a week and perform 100 hours of community service as a physician.

Dianne Bentley - who has since divorced the 74-year-old grandfather from Tuscaloosa - showed the iPad to her family to confirm suspicions of the illicit affair. The move caught Bentley and his team off guard.

She is Alabama's second female governor.

" "Governor Bentley's loyalty shifted from the State of Alabama to himself, ' [special counsel Jack] Sharman wrote in an executive summary". John Rowland of CT during impeachment proceedings.

It is the first ever impeachment directed at an Alabama governor, and the first impeachment the chamber had considered since 1915. Lawmakers can override him with a simple majority and he was never politically powerful in Montgomery.

The report also included text messages Dianne Bentley gave the committee. The Masons were also at Bentley's last state of the state address, watching from the front row of the balcony.
