A man walked into his estranged wife's elementary school classroom in San Bernardino and opened fire without saying a word, killing her and an 8-year-old student before shooting himself in a murder-suicide that spread panic across a city still recovering emotionally from a terror attack just 15 months ago.
Emergency dispatchers began receiving 911 calls reporting shots fired around 10:27 a.m., San Bernardino Public Information Officer Lt. Mike Madden said in a press conference earlier on Monday.
"They're being well cared for - having snacks, playing games and watching a Disney movie", one officer tweeted, as concerned parents descended on the elementary school.
Students at nearby Cal State San Bernardino were told to shelter in place amid the report of an active shooter a few blocks away, the university said.
Students at North Park were taken to Cajon High School for safety.
In addition to North Park, Cajon Elementary School and Hillside Elementary School were also placed on lockdown, according to the School District.
"She was happy we got to see her and she got to see up", the unidentified woman said.
San Bernardino Police Chief Jarrod Burguan said the incident appeared to be a domestic-related murder suicide.
A San Bernardino school spokeswoman said one of the victims was a teacher. There are 500 children at the predominantly Latino elementary school, the Los Angeles Times reported. They were seen making their way across the playground holding hands in a scene that was eerily reminiscent of the shootings at Sandy Hooks Elementary School in Newtown, Conn. Adam Lanza, 20, killed 20 children and six adults at that school on December 14, 2012. "Their patience with the process will be helpful".
Marsden said some students may need to be interviewed by investigators, which could contribute to the delay, Marsden said. He added that it is not uncommon for a spouse to gain access to a school campus to meet with their spouse.
Police identified the boy who died as Jonathan Martinez.
The North Park campus will be closed for at least two days amid the investigation, the school district superintendent said. "This is an absolutely tragic event". We're still waiting for my other granddaughter.
He entered a special education classroom of first to fourth graders at North Park Elementary and told the staff at the front desk that he was dropping something off for his wife, Karen Smith, who teaching in the classroom.
