Last night in the Thunder's 110-79 win over the Milwaukee Bucks, the NBA All Star has tied Oscar Robertson's single season triple double record with 41 by scoring 12 points, grabbing 13 rebounds and dishing out 13 assists in just 22 minutes of playtime.
With one week and five games left until the playoffs, the Thunder got back on track with another benchmark Westbrook performance and a much-needed lift from the supporting cast - players who have sold out, who have joined in the pursuit of the triple-double with him.
It wasn't the most dominant Westbrook performance - his 12 points were a season low - but he ran the game for the three quarters he played; he had 13 assists to go with 13 rebounds.
The game was tied at 95-all until Doug McDermott connected on a 3-pointer, earning Westbrook his 10th assist, with 1:24 left. Kyle Korver, back in action after a four-game absence with a left-foot injury, added three three-pointers and scored 11 points off the bench.
Tonight against the Grizzlies, Westbrook has a chance to break Robertson's record, an unheard of feat that would rival snapping Joe Dimaggio's 56-game hit streak or Wilt Chamberlain's 100-point game. "I never dreamed about a moment like this, to be able to be on this stage".
With a seventh straight triple-double, Westbrook matched his career-high streak fashioned earlier this season. "Leadership to me was more important than averaging points or field goal percentage or whatever, because I think that's what gets us the farthest and helps us win a championship".
Westbrook is nearing a triple-double average for the season.
"The crowd was screaming it, so yeah I heard it", Westbrook said.
After the Thunder's rout of the Bucks, Milwaukee guard Jason Terry was convinced who the victor should be. The Thunder have clinched a playoff spot and trail the Utah Jazz (48-30) by 3.5 games in the Northwest Division standings. Reserve center Enes Kanter led the Thunder with 17 points.
Michael Beasley had 14 points to lead the Bucks (40-38), who have lost two in a row.
Westbrook already had 16 points to clear one of the three categories and was halfway to the assists part with five at halftime. Carter recalled when some suggested Kidd could reach Robertson's record and remembered a playoff series where Kidd averaged a triple-double over six or seven games. That will pressure OKC's front office to do something this offseason to build a better roster around the other-worldly talent Westbrook provides.
According to ESPN Stats and Info, it was the second time this season in which Westbrook has been one rebound shy of a triple-double. So at the half, the Thunder led Memphis 57-50. Jeff Teague added 20 points for IN, which moved one half-game ahead of Miami for eighth place IN the Eastern Conference.
