The first beaning came on an inside fastball from Cubs righty Jake Arrieta. Louis outfielder Stephen Piscotty left the ardinals' game against the Cubs Tuesday night after he was hit in the head by a ball while sliding into home. He was relieved by Koji Uehara, who got a nice defensive play by Albert Almora Jr., who leapt at the wall to rob Matt Adams with one out. A pumped-up Almora then celebrated with left fielder Kyle Schwarber as Adams tipped his batting helmet in appreciation of the catch. The run scored, but Piscotty appeared stunned by the headshot and left the game. "Then I didn't, but then I told her 'I didn't hit you one, but I robbed you one, ' and she loved it and thought it was pretty amusing. I love that stuff".
This year the target on the world champion Cubs' backs might be even bigger, but that's just fine with Maddon. He was hit by baseballs three times in the fifth inning against the Cubs, the last of which knocked the former Amador Valley High and Stanford star out of the game.
At times Wednesday afternoon, the sun wound up shining on downtown St. Louis.
Verlander (1-0), the AL Cy Young Award runner-up last season, gave up two runs and six hits while walking two in 6 1/3 innings. John Lackey gets the ball, and he was 11-8 with a 3.35 ERA and 180 strikeouts last season. St. Louis had a runner on first in the ninth when Baez went into short right field to take a hit away from Wong. Now, it wasn't a ideal night for Baez as he did commit two errors on the night.
Just a day after signing a 6-year, $33.5 million extension, Stephen Piscotty was earning his money the hard way. He eventually walked off.
"That was just very bad, man", Cubs manager Joe Maddon said of the injury to Piscotty.
"I've never seen that before", Piscotty said Wednesday.
Puerto Rico was fourth at 16, followed by Mexico (nine), Japan (eight), Canada (six), South Korea (four), Curacao and Nicaragua (four each), Panama (three), and Australia, Brazil and Colombia (two apiece).
Addison Russell led off with a double, and Willson Contreras walked. Instead it gave the Cubs a huge boost as they looked to notch their first win of the season. He immediately underwent concussion protocols after trainers helped him to his feet, and will undergo further testing, the St Louis Post-Dispatch reported. Danny Valencia had two hits and drove in a run, the Mariners' only one in two games against the Astros.
"What he does at second is different", Cubs manager Joe Maddon said of Baez. After a few seconds I kind of figured I just got hit in the face or something like that.
No matter how long they might be held hostage in St. Louis. "My first year (2015), I think teams played us really good". "It works out a lot of the time".
Both teams have Thursday off, and it is possible the game could be played then if weather forces a postponement.
