Scottish celebrations as One for Arthur wins Grand National

He rode One For Arthur on Saturday and won the prestigioushorse racing competition.

Rubstic in 1979 was previously the sole victor to hail from north of the border.

He said: "It was quite a good result for us in England, but we are pretty sure it's not going to be a good result for us in Scotland".

"He's fantastic. He's improved every time". We kept thinking barring accidents he will win the National, and he just has.

"He's done Scotland proud and he's done everyone at the yard proud".

One For Arthur was trained near Kinross by Lucinda Russell, and beat out Cause Of Causes which finished second, and Saint Are which placed third. He took the mantle of Peter Buchanan's stable jockey position. "I was very low some days and thought I wouldn't make it". Sometimes he gets criticised for being too far back but that's how he likes to ride them.

He said: "One of the jockeys stuck his head in as he was passing and shouted, 'We won the Grand National!'".

"Right at the beginning when we bought this horse we asked the owners did they want to win the Gold Cup and the National and we all agreed on the National".

Jockey Derek Fox, who staged a remarkable comeback after breaking his wrist and dislocating a collar bone in a fall four weeks ago, paid tribute to his mount. He just jumped so well, even though he was a long way back. If you had said to me an hour before the race you can take him home now as the ground is too fast I would have put him in the lorry.

"It's the best feeling I've ever had", Fox told the BBC. The preparation for the horse, everything has just gone so smoothly, including winning the race.

"Lots of people will tune in to watch the race for the first time and Mane Match is a fun way of narrowing down the search for your ideal equine partner for Saturday's big race".

Several of the backers of favoured horses knew their fate early when they finally got going after two false starts.

"They are both here today, of course", she said.

Fox, the winning jockey, wearing a blue and white Scottish flag jersey, said: "It's the best feeling I've ever had". It's been an absolutely awesome day.

One For Arthur was ridden to a 41/2-length victory by Derek Fox, who had only been passed fit to ride on Monday after breaking a wrist and a collarbone in a fall nearly exactly a month ago.

"What a day! We have a fantastic team behind us and I'm just so pleased", she said. We've got a fantastic team behind us and it's just great.

"I've had a great partnership with the horse all year. We always thought barring an accident he would be a National victor and it has come true".

So where does the name One For Arthur come from?
