The Ottawa Senators clinch the second seed in the Atlantic Division if they defeat the New York Rangers on Saturday or they get one point against the Rangers and the Boston Bruins lose to the Washington Capitals and the Leafs lose to the Penguins. And maybe they get to the second round.
ISLANDERS 4, SENATORS 2: Anders Lee and Brock Nelson scored in the second period, and NY won at home. We knew - I've been on that other side a whole bunch - you try not to get bumped into and you try to win the game on the power play.
Stuck in a one-for-24 goal funk coming into Saturday's game against the Maple Leafs at Air Canada Centre, Phil Kessel scored a very Phil-like goal in the first period, his first tally in 11 games. He's arguably the most underrated rookie on the team and finished the year with 20 goals and 36 total points.
Blue Jackets: Get the Penguins in the first round. Carter Hutton made 34 saves for St. Louis. The Capitals won the Presidents' Trophy largely on merit, not luck.
Rielly arrived in the wake of the Leafs' bad collapse in Game 7 of the first round of the playoffs against the Boston Bruins in May, 2013. That, too, played into their success.
Matthews became the first player in history to score four goals in his National Hockey League debut, his rapid emergence, alongside a historic class of rookies, central to the Leafs leap up the standings.
Daniel O'Regan scored his first National Hockey League goal to lead San Jose, which will finish third in the Pacific Division. It was a good win for our team, a good win for our city. San Jose defenseman Brent Burns earned an assist for his career-high 76th point, which broke the franchise record of 75 he set past year.
About an hour later, though, Toronto defeated Pittsburgh 3-2 to eliminate the Islanders. The Capitals had the NHL's best regular-season record for the second straight season, and they're loaded at every position as they bid for a first Stanley Cup.
The Jackets charged back with three goals in less than seven minutes.
HURRICANES 4, FLYERS 3: Bryan Bickell scored in the shootout of his final game before retiring because of multiple sclerosis, and Carolina won at Philadelphia. "It's obviously a tough hill to climb, and we need a lot of things to go our way". The 1967-68 Los Angeles Kings, a club comprised nearly all of rookies, had 344, while the 1992-93 Winnipeg Jets had their Teemu Selanne-inspired 330 and the 1981-82 Jets recorded 323.
And at 19:20, while Columbus was shorthanded, the visitors took their first lead.
Mike Babcock didn't have an update on Andersen after the game, saying only that, "Ideally he'll start" in the team's regular season finale against the Columbus Blue Jackets on Sunday. Despite a 5-1-1 run, Philadelphia will miss the playoffs for the third time in five seasons. Had they managed to get past Ottawa, they would have stayed in the Atlantic Division and played the victor of the series between the Montreal Canadiens and New York Rangers, another series in which they could have seriously competed and perhaps even stolen away.
Kari Lehtonen was flawless in the shootout and stopped Matt Duchene, Nathan MacKinnon and Mikko Rantanen to seal the win in the Stars' season finale.
The loss was Toronto's second in a row and magnified the importance of Saturday's game against the Penguins.
Jonathan Huberdeau scored twice as Florida prevailed in its final home game of the season. He added his second goal and 28th this season during a 2-on-1 rush with Mitch Marner.
