Hernandez's RBI single in 9th lifts Phillies over Nats 4-3

A 12-run first inning gave the Phillies a running start on the Washington Nationals.

Though not too much longer.

Cesar Hernandez doubled and Howie Kendrick singled and Odubel Herrera walked and Maikel Franco hit a sacrifice fly and Michael Saunders hit an RBI single and Tommy Joseph hit an RBI single and Cameron Rupp walked and Freddy Galvis hit a sacrifice fly and Aaron Nola walked and Cesar Hernandez walked and Howie Kendrick hit a three-run triple and Odubel Herrera legged out a RBI infield single and Maikel Franco hit an RBI double and Tommy Joseph hit an RBI single and Cameron Rupp struck out.

Far more impressive, however, was the follow-up performance Sunday at Citizens Bank Park unless, of course, you want to focus entirely on the ninth-inning meltdown by closer-for-now Jeanmar Gomez that created an elephant-in-the-room postgame news conference for Pete Mackanin. "A broken-bat single to win the game". The Phils didn't hit a home run in the inning, although they did have three doubles.

Philadelphia piled up nine hits and four walks off Jeremy Guthrie and Enny Romero in the first.

Hellickson was forced to come out of the game after five innings due to hand cramps.

Lehigh Valley batters have struck out 25 times in two games (J.P. Crawford 5, Quinn 5, Nick Williams 4). "I felt like I did that for the most part". Joaquin Benoit, Pat Neshek and Hector Neris combined for three scoreless innings before Gomez took over.

Adam Lind singled with one out and Jayson Werth walked.

"We'll have to find out what we have to do to get better", Franco said try to find out what I have to do to drive a run in.

"After getting out of that first inning and we scored all of those runs, I told myself I had to lock it in right now, because, I mean, as a pitcher it's pretty easy to kind of zone out right there, because you've got so many runs", Nola said. "We just have to be practical and do what is best for the team and we'll know tomorrow".

Cesar Hernandez bailed out his buddy in a clutch spot. The Phillies scored more than 12 runs in a game on just one occasion in their 2016 season. "They played us tough this series, but we definitely let that one get away today".

The two-time All-Star and 15-game victor a year ago certainly wasn't at his best this time around. In order to make 2017 a good season, the Phillies were aware, they needed to make some changes over the off-season. I just took it the other way.

In his first start since the 2015 season, the 38-year-old Guthrie allowed 10 earned runs in just two-thirds of an inning in a 17-3 loss. The Phillies are also 4-1 in Hellickson's last five home starts, and 2-6 in Hellickson's last eight starts with five days' rest.

Hyun Soo Kim hit a tiebreaking RBI single off Dellin Betances in the seventh inning after a rare stolen base by slugger Mark Trumbo, and the Baltimore Orioles remained the only unbeaten team in the majors by rallying past the New York Yankees 5-4 Saturday. Washington returns home Monday for a three-game series against the Cardinals.
