'Get Out' Leads Revamped MTV TV And Film Awards

Last month, the network announced its plans to honor television shows at its annual MTV Movie Awards, renaming the program the MTV Movie & TV Awards.

This means nominees including Emma Watson and Hailee Steinfeld will compete against Hugh Jackman and James McAvoy for the "best actor in a novie" prize.

The other categories, except for Movie of the Year and Show of the Year, are also a mix of both.

Excited for the 2017 MTV Movie Awards?

The same change applies across the categories of Best Actor in a Show, Best Host, Best Villain, Best Hero, and Best Comedic Performance - all are a mix of men and women performers. "They felt really antiquated".

The award show will no longer have gendered categories with Best Actor now encompassing all genders. With a global reach of almost 785 million households, MTV is the cultural home of the millennial generation, music fans and artists, and a pioneer in creating innovative programming for young people.

Horror comedy Get Out leads the MTV nominations, with six nods in categories including movie of the year and best actor for star Daniel Kaluuya. MTV said "best fight against the system" (formerly best fight) will recognize the TV show or movie whose characters exemplify a fight "against a system that tries to keep them down".

Additionally, after going pre-taped past year, the show will revert to being live.

In 2011, the Recording Academy, which sponsors the Grammy Awards, scrapped more than 30 nominating categories, including best Native American album and best spoken-word children's record.

The ceremony, which this year adds television categories for the first time, is set to air live from the Shrine Auditorium on May 7.
