BUFFALO, N.Y. - Saturday's light heavyweight championship fight and UFC 210 main event between Daniel Cormier and Anthony Johnson is official, although it has already fallen under some controversy. He could potentially be facing the victor in his return to competition.
Johnson lost by submission in the second round against Cormier at UFC 210, and the 33-year-old confirmed in the immediate aftermath he would not be returning to the octagon. Back in May 2015, Cormier submitted "Rumble" to capture the vacant 205-pound gold. I am not afraid to Anthony Johnson in no way, shape, or form.
Jones went as far as to call Cormier's weigh-in "one of the dirtiest things I've ever seen in sports", but Cormier could only laugh off that assertion.
"You've got to have the total package to beat people at a certain level in this sport, and DC is closer to that level of having that flawless, complete game". As a fighter, I respect him, we just don't see eye to eye.
Johnson explained that he had commuted to a new opportunity prior to the UFC 210 main event and it's hard to look at his performance as halfhearted.
Johnson had won the first round on all three judges' score-cards after opting to grapple with Cormier, although those tactics ultimately resulted in his demise shortly afterwards.
"He's extremely talented with God-given knockout power. That's absolutely insane", he said.
Even though Cormier is the champ, Johnson enters the fight as the slight betting favorite. I think that was an illegal knee. "I'm so sorry this freaking happened", Weidman said.
"All American" isn't getting a "gimme fight" to snap his skid - Mousasi is a former Strikeforce light heavyweight champion.
"I feel like he's [Johnson] a very one-dimensional fighter", Jones added.
Charles Oliveira defeated Will Brooks via submission.
Thiago Alves used a stunning left hook in the first round and battered Patrick Cote's face to point where it was bathed in blood in a unanimous decision victory.
Meanwhile, Pearl Gonzalez was pulled from her upcoming strawweight bout with Cynthia Calvillo.
