The airstrike is only related to the alleged chemical attack, the USA official claimed, adding that Washington has learned its lesson of "what it looks like when you undertake a violent regime change", referring to Libya.
During a visit to Turkey, Secretary of State Rex Tillerson claimed that the future of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad will be "decided by the Syrian people".
"The strike was a message to Bashar al-Assad that your multiple violations of your agreements at the United Nations, your agreements under the Chemical Weapons Charter back in 2013, that those would not go without a response in the future", he said on ABC on Sunday.
Both leaders also said they backed "an objective inquiry" into the Khan Sheikhun incident has also caused a diplomatic spat between Moscow and London.
"Clearly, that requires the participation of the regime with the support of their allies", he said, "And we're hopeful that Russian Federation will choose to play a constructive role in supporting ceasefires through their own Astana talks, but also, ultimately, through Geneva".
At this time, the US military has not changed its stance toward the Syrian regime, outside of the retaliatory strike in response al-Assad's use of chemical weapons. A host of issues are responsible, topped by suspected Russian attempts to interfere in the US presidential election and Moscow's support for separatists in Ukraine that have prompted USA and European sanctions. The missile strike was a charade.
Joining Trump at the president's Mar-a-Lago resort in Palm Beach, Florida, Tillerson was supposed to focus on the informal summit with Xi. Senior U.S. military officials have said they are looking into whether Russian Federation provided drone surveillance and helped Syrian forces try to cover up what they'd done.
In the interview, the secretary of state went on to say Russian Federation was not targeted by the strike earlier this week.
Tillerson was asked about Rubio's remarks on Face The Nation. Haley said that eventually the unrest in Syria can not end if Assad remains in power. "And in no way do we see peace in that area with Assad at the head of the Syrian government".
"This strike - and I think the president was very clear in his message to the American people that this strike was related exclusively to the most recent horrific use of chemical weapons against women, children, and, as the president said, even small babies", Tillerson said on ABC's This Week. Once we can eliminate the battle against ISIS, conclude that and it is going quite well, then we hope to turn our attention to cease fire agreements between the regime and opposition forces. "The president will make whatever decision he thinks is in the best interests of the American people".
Neither suggested Assad's demise was imminent.
Rubio, in an interview on ABC's This Week Sunday, responded to earlier comments on the show by Secretary of State Rex Tillerson that the USA priority in Syria is to defeat ISIS.
The U.S. missile strikes in Syria carry the implicit threat of a larger U.S. role in the conflict.
Tillerson made the comment during his first round of television appearances on Sunday morning since taking the job.
