Air strike kills 18 in Syria's Idlib province - Observatory

Fallon's comments followed U.K. Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs Boris Johnson's cancelation of his trip to Moscow over the chemical gas attack on civilians in Idlib, Syria and the USA airstrike against the Syrian regime that followed Thursday. "They bear responsibility for the chemical attack last week, and it's going to be very important for Secretary Tillerson to make that clear to Putin and to make it clear that his support for Assad has to stop", Morell said.

USA officials blame Moscow for propping up Assad.

He is due to arrive late Tuesday in Russian Federation for his first visit as secretary of state.

Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) on Friday offered effusive praise for President Donald Trump's strike against Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, and hinted that the president believed more military action in Syria was on the way.

McMaster told Fox News Sunday host Chris Wallace the "president acted decisively" and that while the strike wasn't meant to take out all of Syria's capabilities, "it was a strong signal that the USA will not stand idly by".

But as lawmakers called on Trump to consult with Congress on any future military strikes and a longer-term strategy on Syria, Trump administration officials sent mixed signals on the scope of us involvement.

The regional alliance said the US cruise missile strikes on a Syrian base which Washington said was involved in a chemical attack that killed dozens of civilians would not deter their forces from "liberating" all of Syrian territory.

The statement comes after the United States struck a Syrian air base with dozens of cruise missiles on April 7 in response to what Washington says was a deadly chemical weapons attack against civilians by President Bashar al-Assad's government.

Damascus and Moscow denied Syrian forces were behind the gas attack but Western countries dismissed their explanation that chemicals leaked from a rebel weapons depot after an air strike.

US goals in the region, McMaster said, are "the defeat of ISIS" and "a significant change in the nature of the Assad regime and its behavior in particular".

The ministry also said it showed there was little to gain from talking to Britain, which it said had no real influence over world affairs.

The U.K. defense secretary of state also provided a solution to the Syrian problem saying: "It's time for Russian Federation to be part of the solution and engage constructively with the UN-mediated peace talks".

"Once Daesh threat has been reduced or eliminated, I think we can turn our attention directly to stabilising the situation in Syria", he said.

Russian Federation has backed Syria for much of the six-year conflict, and has used its veto power in the UN Security Council on several occasions to prevent action being taken against the Damascus government.

Iran and Russian Federation have been the key backers of Assad, providing him with military and financial support.

Haley like Tillerson said the USA remains focused on eliminating ISIS from Syria.

USA -backed rebels groups have long pleaded for more US intervention and complained that Washington has only fought the Islamic State group.

He and Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov are scheduled to meet, but it is not known if the secretary of state will also see Putin, who personally bestowed the Order of Friendship on Tillerson in 2012.

The joint command centre also said the presence of U.S troops in northern Syria where Washington has hundreds of special forces helping the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) to oust Islamic State was "illegal" and that Washington had a long-term plan to occupy the area. But Tillerson said he sees no reason for retaliation from Moscow because Russian Federation wasn't targeted.
