Xi, Trump pledge to expand mutually beneficial cooperation, manage differences

As the two leaders wrapped up a Florida summit overshadowed by USA missile strikes in Syria overnight, Xi joined Trump in stressing the positive mood of the meetings while papering over deep differences that have caused friction between the world's two biggest economies. But he will surely be taking Thursday night's military action into account as he sizes up the new USA president.

Xi, speaking through an interpreter, said the two leaders have "arrived at many common understandings, the most important being deepening our friendship and building a kind of trust in keeping with the Sino-U.S. working relationship and friendship".

President Donald Trump will make his first visit to China as he accepted his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping's invitation, the official Xinhua news agency said Friday. White House senior adviser Jared Kushner is seated at left.

During the day, protesters and supporters had gathered by the Southern Bridge near Mar-A-Lago and by Eau Palm Beach.

Trump and first lady Melania Trump greeted Xi and his wife at Mar-a-Lago before making their way to dinner.

Their comments were echoed by a front-page commentary in the overseas edition of the ruling Communist Party's official People's Daily which said the meeting established the tone for the development of U.S.

And they came two days after China ally North Korea test-launched a ballistic missile in violation of United Nations resolutions, raising protests from the United States, South Korea, Japan, and other nations. Trade issues and China's currency manipulation were staples on the trail for Trump, and they are also going to be big topics of conversation with Xi.

The two leaders also did not issue a joint statement or hold a joint press conference, a sign discussions are still taking place.

Secretary of State Rex Tillerson says the US and China have agreed to increase cooperation on trying to get North Korea's to abandon its nuclear weapons program.

The president is spending the weekend at his Florida resort after the two-day meetings with Xi.

The Chinese president invited his USA counterpart to visit this nation, which was accepted by Trump, according to the official Chinese agency, which did not specify the date of the next meeting in this territory.

In a possible harbinger of the kind of punishments Washington could inflict, a leading Chinese telecoms company, ZTE, was fined almost $900 million in March for shipping sensitive USA -made technology to Iran in violation of US sanctions. But economic adviser Peter Navarro, author of the book "Death by China: Confronting the Dragon - a Global Call to Action", prefers trying to isolate China, in keeping with Trump's "America First" mantra.

"Swaggering as a superpower, the USA has been picking only on countries without nuclear weapons and the Trump administration is no exception", the foreign ministry spokesman said, according to KCNA.

Taking action against North Korea has been a sticking point in US talks with the Chinese.

"We would like to see more results-oriented outcomes coming out of these new dialogues and fewer laundry lists, ' said Beijing-based Jacob Parker, vice president of China operations at the U.S". Chinese exports to the US totaled some $388.1 billion past year.
