Russell Westbrook inspired the Oklahoma City Thunder to a crucial victory over the Memphis Grizzlies (yesterday morning, Singapore time) but was left just one rebound short of making National Basketball Association history.
Several minutes into the third quarter of Tuesday's home game against the Milwaukee Bucks, Westbrook notched his 10th rebound and 10th assist of the night to complete his 41st triple-double of the season, tying the legendary Oscar Robertson for the single-season record. He clinched his seventh straight triple-double on an assist to Taj Gibson with 9:17 left in the third quarter.
After the play, he acknowledged the crowd at Chesapeake Energy Arena, which had stood in appreciation. His current season averages in points, rebounds and assists: 31.9, 10.7 and 10.4. Forty-one triple-doubles in a season means there was a 50/50 chance Westbrook would get a triple-double in any game this season. Thunder guard Alex Abrines left the game in the second quarter with a sprained left knee and did not return. But it was the way that Westbrook did it on this night, resembling more a Stephen Curry or Damian Lillard rather than LeBron James, choosing to shoot from long range rather than bull his way to the rim.
"From the tip we did a good job of making it tough for them", point guard Russell Westbrook noted. "I think it will get us even more prepared, even more locked-in, win or lose". Oklahoma City never relinquished the lead as Westbrook recorded the Thunder's final five points.
"With our team, we are just wanting to do what we need to play better", Donovan said.
For starters, Robertson was a slightly more efficient shooter (47.8 effective field goal percentage) than Westbrook (47.4 percent) without the added benefit of the three-point line, introduced in 1979.
When asked about it, Westbrook downplayed wanting to chase a triple-double and said instead he wanted the rebound in order to close out the game. The Thunder have won two games out of last three played matches.
This was the seventh-straight triple-double for Westbrook, which is an awesome feat itself. "I'm the last person to ask about a regular-season game".
Conley and San Antonio Spurs F Kawhi Leonard bumped heads in the fourth quarter of Tuesday's 95-89 Spurs' overtime victory and the collision opened a cut above Conley's eye that required 13 stitches.
By halftime, Westbrook was just two rebounds and two dimes shy of history; he already had 12 points despite missing five of his nine attempts, and the Thunder were up big on the Bucks, 63-39.
