But Hughes, who now has Erik Pieters and Marc Muniesa at his disposal at left back, said this morning: "You look at all good players, but that's not one that's realistic for us, to be honest". We feel as though there is more to come from Gi from a footballing point of view and we'll try to get that out of him.
Saido Berahino had an excellent opportunity to restore parity again immediately up the other end but Simon Mignolet, stretching his left leg to keep out the striker's effort.
"Second half they brought their big hitters on which made an impact but it took a mistake from us". Good news for most of us!
Hughes added: "With the quality of opposition that we've been up against in recent weeks, you could say arguably that this run of fixtures is the most hard we've had this season".
"Performances have been ok, but details is where were are falling down". You've got to be clinical, you've got to be clear and cool-minded.
"It's a little bit hard to take".
Stoke face the danger of being dragged into the relegation battle unless their form improves between now and the end of the season, and Hughes insists they must start with the visit of Hull City next weekend.
"I would really have liked him to have grabbed his opportunity to stay in the team and that hasn't happened". The save of the day, of the month, whatever.
"You need those to go in and at the moment, it's not quite happening".
"Second half we played much better football between the spaces and scored two fantastic goals".
Liverpool playmaker Philippe Coutinho is a major doubt for the trip to Stoke because of illness.
