Clinton on Friday urged the administration to "recognise that we can not in one breath speak of protecting Syrian babies and in the next close America's doors to them".
That was about it. Trump didn't seem particularly interested in tipping the balance of power in a civil war that has lasted six years; killed hundreds of thousands of Syrians; driven millions of Syrians from their homes; and evolved from a revolt against an authoritarian leader into a complex armed conflict involving multiple parties, state and nonstate actors, terror groups, proxy forces and foreign governments, including a US-led coalition, Russian Federation and Iran.
Mr Trump had said during the presidential campaign that he would not be drawn into Syria's conflict. Trump said of the airstrike, "It is in the vital national security interest of the United States to prevent and deter the spread and use of deadly chemical weapons". "It's already happened that my attitude toward Syria and Assad has changed very much".
The Democrat did not name Trump but concluded that the strike serve as a reminder that "politics matter enormously". They say this is what the civil war looks like in Syria.
The photo was taken about 45 minutes after the missiles landed and was posted by Spicer on Twitter with the caption: "WH photo (ed for security): @potus receives briefing on #syria military strike fr Nat Security team, inc @vp, SECDEF, CJCS via secure VTC".
The U.S. has carried out a missile attack on Syrian targets early on Friday that reportedly led to the death of nine civilians including four children, according to the Syrian news agency.
ANGELA MERKEL, German Chancellor (through interpreter): The attack of the United States is understandable, given the dimension of the war crimes.
"The United States, without bothering to investigate the situation, opted for a demonstration of force, and for a military opposition to a country which is fighting global terrorism", the ministry said. He had warned of a red line against the use of chemical weapons, but backed away from military action after a chemical attack in August 2013 killed more than 1,000 Syrians.
Under the memorandum, signed after Russian Federation launched an air campaign in Syria in September 2015, Russian Federation and the United States had exchanged information about their flights to avoid incidents in the crowded skies over Syria - where Russian Federation has several dozen warplanes and batteries of air-defence missiles.
