One For Arthur became only the second Scottish-trained victor of the Grand National after a four-and-a-half-length victory at Aintree.
Cause of Causes, 16-1, finished second with Saint Are, 25-1, and 8-1 pre-race favourite Blaklion third and fourth respectively. And here they were, four years on, watching One For Arthur, the horse they bought at Cheltenham sales, win the Grand National. "I don't often get a chance to ride a horse as good as that".
A sign of a true race horse...
Factoring in winners of the race over the period, the average age of the horse has been 9.88 - so if you're going to bet on a horse, make sure it's ten years of age - this brings Perfect Candidate, Tenor Nivernais, O'Faolains Boy and Just A Par into play for the stats trend followers out there.
The owners Deborah Thomson and Belinda McClung - who chose to indulge in a sporting passion of their own as their husbands spent all their time on the golf course - could not believe their good fortune.
"The doctor said the only way I would be able to race is with a splint on", Fox said.
One for Arthur was trained at Lucinda Russell's stable near Milnathort and is jointly owned by Belinda McClung, from the Borders, and Debs Thomson, who lives in East Lothian.
McClung added: "I thought this morning, it's baking hot so there's no pressure now, he's not going to win on that ground but I have to say he's just shown his class today".
'It's been an absolutely incredible day, ' she told ITV after the race.
"We just wanted a horse to have some fun", a giddy Thomson told The Associated Press, with a glass of champagne in her hand.
Roi Des Francs and Rogue Angel had led for long periods and looked to be running strongly until fading over the last three or four fences as One For Arthur pulled through for the win and wrote its name in the history books.
Russell, ably assisted by former champion jockey Peter Scudamore at her Kinross base, finally laid the ghost to rest after a long wait since Rubstic's win in 1979. "He's the gamest horse I've ever ridden and he galloped all the way to the line".
'Arthur cruised the race, Derek rode it so well.
"It's unbelievable. I can't believe it. He's given us a fantastic journey". If you want Grand National success, bet on number six. "He jumped fantastically and Derek gave him a great ride".
"We chose to have a horse together and that is when we found Arthur".
