North Korea said on Saturday U.S. missile strikes against a Syrian airfield on Friday were "an unforgivable act of aggression" that showed its decision to develop nuclear weapons was "the right choice a million times over".
In a week that saw events unfolding daily, Trump's announcement Thursday about the US missile strike against Syria happened against the backdrop of the president's Florida resort where he was hosting Chinese Leader Xi Jinping and his wife.
The first and most controversial course of action under consideration is placing US nuclear weapons in South Korea.
Meanwhile, South Korean officials say North Korea appears ready to unveil a new intercontinental ballistic missile during a huge military parade planned for April 15, according to UPI.
Both of these scenarios were part of a North Korea review prepared ahead of Trump's meeting with the Chinese leader.
North Korea was at the top of the agenda at the summit despite being overshadowed by a missile strike on an airbase in Syria. "'When I make a threat, I will follow through.' That's certainly something the Chinese and North Koreans will be thinking about".
"President Xi ... shared the view that this has reached a very serious stage in terms of the advancement of North Korea's nuclear capabilities", Tillerson said. The U.S. withdrew all nuclear weapons from South Korea 25 years ago.
The February launch, using solid fuel, verified that a new version of the missile "can be tipped with a nuclear warhead and the feature of evading interception", North Korea's official media said at that time, while pointing out that it was a follow-up of the success achieved in August previous year when a submarine-launched ballistic missile reached as high as 550 km and flew about 500 km. According to the report, one of the options is placing American nukes in South Korea.
Trump has previously criticized China's handling of North Korea, telling Reuters in March he was "not liking" the dynamic, adding, "I know exactly what's going on between China and North Korea and everybody else".
Another option would be killing the famously unpredictable leader, who is known for his belligerent threats toward the US and its Asian allies.
Last month, China proposed that North Korea suspend its nuclear and missile activities in return for the United States discontinuing its military exercises with South Korea.
"The Syria attack thoroughly reminds us the fact that it is absolutely unsafe to have any illusions about imperialism and only military power of our own will protect us from imperialistic aggression", he added.
