Leafs clinch playoff berth with win over Pens; Frederik Andersen injured

How have the Capitals fared against the Maple Leafs and Bruins in the playoffs?

Things turned dicey for the Leafs though two minutes into the second when Andersen was bumped in the head by the hip of Penguins forward Tom Sestito. Edmonton's Connor McDavid needs three points for 100 on the season with two games remaining.

Matthews became only the fourth rookie under 20 in National Hockey League history to score 40 goals, his 40th into an empty net sealing the Leafs wild playoff-clinching win over Pittsburgh.

"That's a night I'll remember for a long time", Brown said. "Kappy scored a big goal and we just went for it".

"Yeah, I will [remember]", said Matthews, smiling.

"It was really back and forth but to be able to pull out this one is definitely a pretty good feeling", Matthews said. "It's huge to clinch".

The hope is that some of their injured players can dress and use these games as tuneups for the playoffs.

Saturday's victory against the Penguins clinched a playoff spot for the Leafs.

Phil Kessel, Sidney Crosby and Jake Guentzel scored for Pittsburgh, and Marc-Andre Fleury gave up four goals on 30 shots. This time it was where they blossomed.

"I think he is a real good player and a real good man and has a chance to be special".

"We got better just in the few weeks I've been here", Boyle said. "But I still thought we put ourselves in a good position to win the game".

Don't tell the Penguins' No. 81 that his team's 81st game of the season barely mattered.

The Leafs, who finish the regular season at home against Columbus on Sunday, will play Washington or Ottawa in the first round.

Through two periods, though, the Maple Leafs controlled much of the play and held a 47-29 advantage in attempted shots. "There's been games this year where we didn't play well and we ended up losing and that was just the case last night".

There were no bright spots in the next three years as Leafs president Brendan Shanahan stripped the team bare and started over. "We believe in each other in here".

He was eventually helped off the ice by a team trainer and replaced by backup Curtis McElhinney. McElhinney had left that side of his net gaping earlier in the game and was fortunate Guentzel inexplicably hit the post at the time from in close.

The Toronto Maple Leafs, at 40-26-15 and 95pts, can alter the playoff seeding when they face Columbus Blue Jackets at 6:00 p.m. ET. McElhinney allowed one goal on 10 shots.

The Blue Jackets clinched a playoff spot with 11 games left in the regular-season schedule and that could be a factor.

Sestito was given a goaltender interference penalty for the play, which Toronto scored on. After the game, Babcock called Nylander "fantastic" and he absolutely was, especially in the first half. "It's still a back-to-back so prepare and play hard". Van Riemsdyk's wrap-around attempt was a couple inches from sneaking past Fleury. He then danced around Penguins defenseman Justin Schultz and beat Fleury for his 27th goal.

Tampa Bay Lightning's Brayden Point celebrates after scoring against the Toronto Maple Leafs during the third period of an NHL hockey game Thursday, April 6, 2017, in Toronto.
