North Carolina 92, Butler 80: Joel Berry II scored 26 points and Justin Jackson added 24 as top-seeded North Carolina moved to the Elite Eight with a 92-80 victory over Butler in the NCAA South Region on Friday night.
Monk: "He just did not want to lose and we did not want to lose". Kentucky coach John Calipari has had much more success in the NCAA Tournament than Steve Alford. Prior to taking over as coach of the Wildcats, Calipari spent nine seasons at Memphis, where he compiled a 214-68 record. "That shows we have improved", Fox said.
The only No. 2 seed to survive and advance, the Wildcats (32-5) won their 14th straight game.
Kentucky starts a three-guard lineup, two of whom average more than four assists. In a matchup of highly touted freshman point guards, Fox looked like the player who should be in the mix as the top choice in June's National Basketball Association draft, rather than UCLA's Lonzo Ball.
"I scored like the first 8 points of the game, and after that I was like you know it's going to be a good night for me", Fox said. The game was a back-and-forth thing for a half, but then Malik Monk got going and the combination of those two freshmen left UCLA - which has two vaunted freshmen in Ball and T.J. Leaf - in the dust, which is a place these sleek Bruins have never been. Fellow freshman guard Malik Monk also played well with 21 points for Kentucky.
Notre Dame (33-3) used a 30-point third period to build a 15-point lead and weren't seriously threatened the rest of the way. Fox scored the first eight points for Kentucky and was all over the court forcing turnovers or diving to the floor to force a jump ball.
DJ Dozier and Chris Silva had 12 points apiece and Duane Notice added 11 for the Gamecocks. They were able to have six player score in double figures at Kentucky and that kind of balance is what will help them tonight as well. Three Bruins let an errant Kentucky shot hit the rim and sail over their heads into the hands of Monk, who scored. Ball had 10 points, shooting 1 for 6 from 3-point range, as well as eight assists and four turnovers. Sindarius Thornwell led the charge with 24 points.
Fox might not be the pure passer that Ball is, but healthy averages of 16.1 points and 4.6 assists suit Kentucky just fine. Hawkins finished with eight points. The strings he pulled against UCLA were master strokes - we can't say the same of all this coach's Big Dance moments - and he'll need a few more to take down the Tar Heels.
Do they make their teammates look good or is it the other way around? "They're very elite and those are the three reasons (and) there's many more reasons, but those are three very good reasons why (the were) in the position they're in".
LeVar Ball also said he's seeking a $1 billion shoe contract for his family. After his team's loss, he reiterated that he is very happy at UCLA and in Los Angeles.
No. 3 seed UCLA (31-4) vs.
"I told him, you've got to get 20 a game, somehow", Calipari said.
