Chelsea restore seven-point lead, Manchester City win

Chelsea will be keen to pick up all three points on the south coast on Saturday after close rivals Tottenham earned a convincing 4-0 win over Watford earlier in the day, bringing the points gap to just four at the top.

But Bournemouth battled their way back into the game and continued to threaten as Chelsea tried to slow the game down.

They would have gone behind in the second minute had keeper Thibaut Courtois not prevented a David Luiz own goal with a stunning save.

And the weather conditions almost played a role in Bournemouth taking the lead just two minutes in when David Luiz attempted to clear Ryan Fraser's cross from the right, but instead skewed the ball toward his own net - which Thibaut Courtois leapt to save.

Alonso's free-kick came at a vital time for Chelsea with Bournemouth pushing for a leveller in the second half, but the defender's fifth league goal of the season saw his side home.

Costa has praised Chelsea team-mate Eden Hazard and hopes he stays at the club for a long time.

Kante's pass for the goal - his first Premier League assist for Chelsea - was accurate while the way Hazard ran around Boruc and coolly slotted in was impressive.

Even against a team as well-drilled as Bournemouth, Chelsea have made a virtue of punishing mistakes ruthlessly and that was what they did so effectively in scoring the opening two goals. They could win three in a row for just the second time in the competition (also in October 2016).

Southampton reached the 40-point mark as Jordy Clasie's well-struck 25th minute goal gave them victory by the same margin at West Brom.

"Then we conceded and lost a bit of confidence but then we managed the game and scored another with Marcos Alonso".

It came from nowhere, with Marcos Alonso stepping up to a free kick that it had looked like David Luiz was set to take, whipping a ideal curler into the top corner.

The Blues next travel to Manchester United, their sternest of six league fixtures between now and the end of the season. Boruc could only watch as the ball curled into his top corner.
