Anthony Johnson shockingly retires after UFC 210 loss to Daniel Cormier

He fought his way up through the welterweight division at 170 but had his struggles to make weight.

Daniel Cormier retained his UFC light heavyweight title with a submission win over heavy-hitting Anthony "Rumble" Johnson - before taunting British fighter Jimi Manuwa.

With UFC 210 around the corner, there are two other particular milestones many fighting fans will be looking forward to this year.

"That was absolutely nuts", Jones told reporters during his media availability on Friday night. Midway through the second round, he tripped Johnson to the floor, moved to his back and set the stage for the choke with some patented ground-and-pound.

In a shocking turn of events, Johnson then stood in the middle of the octagon and announced his retirement. Cormier won the first fight, but the rematch nearly didn't happen after Cormier initially missed weight this morning. Cormier also stated that if the UFC would let him, then he would do a one-off pro wrestling match. Should the fight go past the third round, Cormier will have no problem outlasting Johnson. The two were expected to rematch at UFC 206, but Cormier had to pull out of the fight.

Cormier has taken notice of the advertisements promoting Jones' UFC 210 after-party around the city.

Kick upstairs from Cormier to start the second round.

"A knockout would definitely be better (than a submission)", Johnson admitted when pressed. Gegard Mousasi is a slight favorite over Chris Weidman in their middleweight fight. Unfortunately, the fight is only scheduled for three rounds.

The two top fighters have contrasting styles.

The Dublin, Ga., native finishes his MMA career with a 22-6 record, including notable wins over Alexander Gustafsson, Glover Teixeira, Ryan Bader, Phil Davis, Antonio Rogerio Nogueira and former UFC heavyweight champion Andrei Arlovski. He even calls him the fastest striker he has ever fought. Mousasi also has a methodical approach that should serve to keep him out of trouble against Weidman, who in both of his losses worn out when he wasn't able to dominate early.

A battle of UFC veterans and former title challengers, this matchup between Patrick Cote and Thiago Alves will likely play out on the feet.

Johnson, 33, is regarded as one of the most feared knockout artists in mixed martial arts history.

Expect both fighters to come out and attempt to establish range. He's not going to get it, but he keeps pressing DC into the fence. A very entertaining fight but the decision was correct.

The major question now framing the UFC 210 main event is whether he can do something similar to the champion.

UFC was back in Buffalo for the first time since NY lifted its MMA ban and ran a card in the city for the first time since UFC 7 on September 8, 1995, was headlined by Ken Shamrock and Oleg Taktarov's fight to a ridiculous 33-minute draw.

The last time the UFC held an event in Buffalo was in September 1995.
