Winger Jesse Lingard renews contract with Man-U

The EFL Cup winners head to Sunderland on Sunday hoping to close the gap on fourth-placed Manchester City, who could have opened up a seven-point advantage by the time Mourinho's men kick-off at the Stadium of Light.

"20 unbeaten. I know 10 draws are 10 points".

"I am working really hard at the moment, especially now more than ever", the England global added.

Mourinho believes the unbeaten run, however, augurs well for the future confidence of the team. "No more news. [Chris] Smalling, [Juan] Mata and [Phil] Jones are long-term". "But the points are the reality".

Lingard, 24, will see his salary rise to 100,000 pounds ($125,000) a week under the new contract, which gives the club an option to extend the deal for an additional year, reports Efe.

"What makes me think we're strong is the way opponents play against us because that's a big change", he said.

The 24-year-old England worldwide has committed his future to United until 2021.

"I have sympathy with every manager that is fighting hard to reach the objectives and he is in trouble to do it", Mourinho said.

Phil Jagielka's 22nd-minute opener looked poised to condemn United to a first defeat in 20 league games.

"I know he's suffered an injury but there must be something fundamentally wrong if the manager is questioning your attitude, training performances, desire".

"We are not strong enough because we are not winning, we are not strong or good enough to score the goals we should".

Januzaj has flattered to deceive throughout his time on Wearside and Mourinho, although insisting he has made up his mind whether to keep or sell the Belgian winger, was not forthcoming on his plans.

"I know very well within myself I can do more, I want to say that, for next year, I am going to have more goals and more assists".

Jose Mourinho has revealed that Manchester United will be without five senior players - including captain Wayne Rooney - when they take on Sunderland this weekend. They've had two bad results in a row and I don't think they can make the top four anymore.
