As the two leaders wrapped up their meeting on Friday at Trump's Mar-a-Lago resort, the U.S. leader said: "We have made tremendous progress in our relationship with China".
Trump was at his Florida estate for his first summit with Chinese President Xi Jinping. Later he accepted Xi Jinping's invitation to visit China "with pleasure", China's official Xinhua news agency reports.
Trump had said he meant to raise concerns about China's trade practices and press Xi to do more to rein in North Korea's missile and nuclear programmes.
Trump says they made "tremendous progress" over dinner Thursday, and he's predicting that even more progress will be made before Xi departs later Friday.
On Air Force One enroute to Florida Trump pointed to the crisis in North Korea as a top priority in the meetings with Xi.
Xi further said that the bilateral relationship between the two countries has made historic progress and brought enormous and pragmatic benefits to the peoples of both sides while experiencing ups and downs since the normalization of China-U.S. relations 45 years ago.
Russia's Foreign Ministry said it is suspending a memorandum with Washington - signed after Russian Federation began an air campaign in support of Assad in September 2015 - under which the two countries exchange information about sorties over Syria.
Trump had campaigned with strident anti-China rhetoric and had angered Beijing before taking office by talking to the president of Taiwan, the self-ruled island Beijing claims as its own. Not long after dinner the US announced the missile barrage on an air base in Syria in retaliation for a chemical weapons attack against civilians.
"We have engaged in deeper understanding, and have built a trust - a preliminary working relationship and friendship", he said. He said previous US presidents had not taken care of the issue the way they should have.
The protocol-conscious Chinese most is the risk that Trump could publicly embarrass Xi, after several foreign leaders experienced awkward moments with the president.
"We have been treated unfairly and have made bad trade deals with China for many, many years". And within Trump's administration, there are still divisions over how to approach China. Russia, which has military forces in Syria aiding Assad's government, says the deaths were caused by a gas leak from a depot where rebel groups stored chemical weapons, a charge the rebels deny and USA intelligence officials say is false. Staffan de Mistura said Russian Federation requested the meeting, which was "agreed upon" by the United States.
He also urged the two countries to manage differences and address sensitive issues in a constructive way.
Trump repeated that he would be willing to act unilaterally to rein in North Korea, but said that he thinks "China will want to be stepping up" to help the USA, according to the White House. In closed-door meetings until Friday, Trump is expected to repeat the kind of tough statements he often makes on Twitter about the trade deficit with China.
The White House says the president hopes to re-boot the relationship with China during this high-profile trip.
The U.S. Secretary of State, Rex Tillerson, was the first in the Trump's administration to greet Xi on his arrival. Chinese exports to the US totaled some $388.1 billion previous year.
"We would like to see more results-oriented outcomes coming out of these new dialogues and fewer laundry lists", said Beijing-based Jacob Parker, vice president of China operations at the US-China Business Council, although he added that he saw the meeting as "generally positive" on commercial issues.
