Some pundits predict United Nations Ambassador Nikki Haley will one day run for president, but for a month, at least, she will be - of the 15-nation UN Security Council.
Mrs Haley told ABC News that, whatever Mr Trump has said about his respect for President Vladimir Putin, the U.S. leader "has not once called me and said, 'Don't beat up on Russian Federation'". "There's no question about that".
"The original call that I received to go to Trump Tower was to discuss secretary of state", she said.
Although Haley said she didn't trust Russian Federation or Putin, she conceded that the United States needed them to deal with bigger problems.
Instead, Haley claimed her counterparts at the United Nations are focused on United Nations business, and are "relieved" that the U.S.is "starting to lead again".
The North conducted two nuclear tests and 24 ballistic missile tests past year, defying six Security Council sanctions resolutions banning any testing. And I think the answer to the question is this effort to point the Congress in other directions, basically say, 'Don't look at me, don't look at Russian Federation, there is nothing to see here.' You know, I would tell people, whenever they see the president use the word 'fake, ' it ought to set off alarm bells.
"What we are going to do is say China, you know that you are the only one that is doing this. I don't have them interfere in everything that I'm doing".
If a procedural vote is requested, the usa will need to garner nine votes in favor from the 15 council members to proceed with the meeting.
In a separate conversation, Mr Trump's deputy national security adviser, KT McFarland, told the FT there was a "real possibility" North Korea could be capable of hitting the United States with a nuclear-armed missile by the end of Trump's first term. "We also need their pressure when it comes to dealing with China and North Korea".
In her comments on Monday, Haley said the U.S. can be frank with countries it has good relations with on issues such as human rights. Past year the North conducted two nuclear tests and two dozen tests of ballistic missiles.
In fact, we were under the assumption Haley was appointed exclusively as a political favor to Henry McMaster - the scandal-scarred former lieutenant governor who ascended to the state's chief executive office upon Haley's confirmation as United Nations ambassador.
Also last month, North Korea state media said the country had conducted a test of a high-thrust engine that would help achieve world-class satellite launch capability, indicating the test was of a new type of rocket engine for long-range missiles.
Former Defense Secretary Ash Carter, however, said he doubted that Beijing will cooperate.
So should foreign leaders, the president tweets something, they should ignore it?
While China provides diplomatic and economic support to its neighbor, it claims that its influence over Kim Jong Un's government is limited.
