Syrian President Assad Calls US-Strike 'Foolish, Irresponsible'

President Donald Trump speaks at Mar-a-Lago in Palm Beach, Fla., Thursday, April 6, 2017, after the USA fired a barrage of cruise missiles into Syria Thursday night in retaliation for this week's gruesome chemical weapons attack against civilians.

A Syrian opposition group, the Syrian Coalition, welcomed the US attack, saying it puts an end to an age of "impunity" and should herald the start of a larger campaign against Damascus.

"The place of the fall of the other missiles is unknown", Konashenkov said, according to Russia's TASS news agency.

The Syrian civil war has taken another turn with the massive cruise missile strike by the United States on an airbase of the Bashar al-Assad government.

Here is a look at reaction around the world to the USA missile attack.

"Overnight, the U.S. has taken military action against the Syrian regime, targeting the airfield in Shayrat which was used to launch the chemical weapons attack earlier this week", the British government spokesman said.

US forces are said to have targeted Shayrat Airfield in western Syria.

"We have a very high level of confidence that the attacks were carried out under aircraft under the direction of Bashar al-Assad's regime".

Peskov was also quoted as saying that Russian Federation did not believe that Syria possessed chemical weapons and that the US move would inevitably create a serious obstacle to creating an global coalition to fight terrorism, an idea that Putin has repeatedly pushed.

"The Australian Government strongly supports the swift and just response of the United States", Turnbull said on Friday.

"President Trump should make his case in front of the American people and allow their elected representatives to debate the benefits and risks of further Middle East intervention to our national security interests", Lee said in a statement.

Assad's office said the government would redouble its efforts against rebel groups after the United States strike - the first direct military action by Washington against the Damascus regime. But, he added, "This was not a small strike".

Pentagon spokesman Captain Jeff Davis said the targets included aircraft, structures, petroleum and logistical storage, and ammunition supply bunkers.

In a statement, Corbyn said: "The US missile attack on a Syrian government air base risks escalating the war in Syria still further".

The State Department said Tillerson had spoken by phone to Lavrov after the chemical attack to get Russia's take on what happened.

Nato's secretary general, Jens Stoltenberg, said Assad "bears full responsibility" for the USA airstrikes against an airbase in Syria. That is not clear yet, especially given the highly personalised and mercurial nature of President Donald Trump's policy-making.

US President Donald Trump said the attack was a response to the alleged chemical weapon use in Syria's Idlib on Tuesday, which Washington blames on the Syrian government.

Syrian state TV reported a USA missile attack on a number of military targets and called the attack an "aggression". "This could be viewed as an act of aggression of the USA against a UN nation", Viktor Ozerov is quoted as saying. Reuters reported that the Syrian state news agency said the strikes killed nine civilians, including four children, in areas near the targeted airbase.

President Vladimir Putin's spokesman Dmitry Peskov speaks with The Associated Press in Moscow, April 6, 2017.

"Years of previous attempts at changing Assad's behaviour have all failed and failed very dramatically", Trump said as he announced the attack from his Florida resort, Mar-a-Lago, where he was meeting Chinese President Xi Jinping.

Meanwhile, U.S. Sen Dick Durbin (D., Ill.), released a statement saying that his "preliminary briefing by the White House indicated that this was a measured response to the Syrian nerve gas atrocity". We have people that want to fight both at the same time. However, the toughest direct USA action to date in six years of civil war in Syria signals a sudden shift in policy by Washington and increases the likelihood of confrontation with Assad's main military allies, Russian Federation and Iran. He is scheduled to travel to Russian Federation next week.

China has routinely sided with Russian Federation in blocking action by the U.N. Security Council on Syria, and Beijing's special envoy for the Syrian crisis has praised Russia's military role there as effective in combating worldwide terrorism. He said military positions were targeted in Syria and in Homs specifically, in order to publically "serve the goals of terrorism in Syria and the goals of Israel in the long run".

Mr Trump was among those who told Mr Obama he should not circumvent Congress.

The strike came two days after the attack in the opposition-held town of Khan Skeikhoun killed at least 70 civilians, including 20 children.
