Pearl Jam, Tupac, Yes, Journey to be inducted into Rock Hall

Inductees Neal Schon, left, and Steve Perry from the band Journey embrace at the 2017 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony.

Pearl Jam was formed in Seattle, its first show at the old Off Ramp Cafe in 1990, with four of the original members either born in the Seattle area or spending their formative years here; singer Eddie Vedder, the lone member without significant Seattle ties before joining the band, having grown up in San Diego.

David Letterman will induct Pearl Jam in Young's place tomorrow. Relix magazine noted that the relationship between Pearl Jam and David Letterman "is as extensive as their storied past with Young". As the foundational prog rock band prepares for its induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame this evening, several reports have surfaced indicating that Rush's Geddy Lee will be filling in on bass for Squire on at least one song.

"While awards and accolades are understandably subjective and a countless number of our peers have yet to be honored, we do feel fortunate to be recognized and provided the opportunity to reunite with everyone who has been part of the group".

But he also referenced the band's famous 1994 fight with TicketMaster and said that thanks to the band "every concert ticket today in America is free". Former drummer Dave Krusen sat in for "Alive". I was nearly 50 and even I felt pissed off!

Electric Light Orchestra, known for its marriage of rock and classical, brought strings into a cover of Berry's "Roll Over Beethoven" before going into the band's most recognizable hit, "Evil Woman".

Pearl Jam's Eddie Vedder (front) and Matt Cameron perform at the 2016 Bonnaroo music festival. "He read the letter in which Vedder told Harry that if he learned to play one song on the guitar, he'd get him a new one". For reasons that have yet to be explained, the hall is honoring only the first and fifth Pearl Jam drummers.

In addition to Pearl Jam, the new rock class incudes the late rapper Tupac Shakur, ELO, Journey, Nile Rodgers, Joan Baez and Yes. Like most conflicted "artists", their overnight success began to soul-ache them over time, especially lead singer Ed, and by the early aughts Pearl Jam predictably nearly imploded.

"It was 49 years ago tonight I met Chris Squire at a bar", singer Jon Anderson said of the band's founding bass player who died in 2015. The ceremony will be edited down for an HBO special premiering April 29.
