Westwood, three-over after 12 holes, birdied five in a row starting at the par-5 13th for a two-under par 70 that left him third after 18 holes, five adrift of United States leader Charley Hoffman and one back of American William McGirt.
Willett, who's struggled with his game since winning the green jacket last spring, is now six over on his round, and has work to do to make the cut.
"There's a lot of good in there, it's just unfortunate, obviously week to week it doesn't matter, really".
"It would've been nice if we could kind of get a little bit of a break for the weekend, just to give us all a little more golf under our belts".
"We've had two fabulous years and then you have a little bit of a downturn and it feels like the world is coming to an end".
If he can't turn things around, he'll be the first reigning champion to miss the cut since Mike Weir in 2004.
Now, regular readers will know I'm jumping ship here having had a small-stakes, speculative play on Cabrera Bello yesterday, but it's important to acknowledge when you've made a mistake and opposing Mickelson at Augusta was exactly that.
Hoffman could only add a 75 to his brilliant opening 65, with the last of his five bogeys in six holes allowing Garcia to briefly move into the outright lead.
A month later he finished second in the US PGA Championship at the age of 19, but has since recorded a further 21 top-10 finishes without claiming a maiden major title. "Hopefully these are the toughest conditions we have played in and hopefully I can go a lot lower over the weekend".
Westwood, whose most recent win came at the 2015 Indonesian Masters, said he kept his composure after his poor start.
Speaking to the Telegraph this week, dad Jeff said: "Nothing would surprise me with Tyrrell". "I've shown myself many times after that I can contend and I truly feel I cannot only win one (major) but more than one. That's already a win and if we can put the cherry on top that would be even better".
Willett's third shot soared over the green, followed by his chip shot rolling back to his feet. So I feel like I need to snag something tomorrow.
