He says police also found an object in the truck that "could be a bomb or an incendiary object, we are still investigating it".
Police said they had found a suspicious device in the vehicle but said they did not yet know if it was a homemade bomb, as reported by public broadcaster SVT.
April 8: Swedish Police is suspecting that the man arrested in connection with the attack on a crowd of people in central Stockholm, to be the driver of the truck.
Police said earlier on Friday after the attack that they had detained the man who "matched the description" of a photo released of a suspect wearing a dark hoodie and military green jacket.
Swedish police say they have arrested a man who is "likely" the driver of the beer truck which plowed into a group of pedestrians and store, killing four.
It is unclear yet whether more people were involved in the truck attack, but it is not ruled out by police.
Sweden's police chief said authorities were confident they had detained the man who carried out the attack.
Police also advised people to avoid central Stockholm due to irregular traffic while the area around the attack site remained cordoned off.
"We will always do everything we can to protect Sweden, but we can't guarantee that it won't happen again", Prime Minister Stefan Lofven told reporters.
In the past year alone, Islamic State militants have claimed responsibility for the deaths of more than 100 people in Europe.
Last December, 12 people were killed and at least 48 people were wounded when a truck drove into a Christmas Market in Berlin.
A truck rammed into people on a central Stockholm street before crashing into a department store on Friday, killing no fewer than four people and injuring about 15 others.
The man was arrested in a shop in Marsta, a suburb north of Stockholm.
He said: "Terrorists want us to be afraid, want us to change our behaviour, want us to not live our lives normally, but that is not what we're going to do".
"We have confirmed that he is a man, 39 years old, from Uzbekistan".
Children were among the injured, an earlier statement from Stockholm's regional health care authorities said. The city's subway service was halted Friday afternoon.
"But such a goal will never be achieved in Sweden", he said.
A gaping hole in the wall of the store showed the force of the impact from the truck, which was removed overnight for examination by forensics experts, and dozens of people gathered to pay their respects and leave flowers, stunned by the attack. "In connection with a delivery to a restaurant called Caliente, someone jumped into the truck and drove it away while the driver was unloading his delivery", Spendrups spokesman Marten Luth told the Swedish news agency TT.
In February, U.S. President Donald Trump suggested that Sweden could be the next European country to suffer the kind of extremist attacks that have devastated France, Belgium and Germany.
Neutral Sweden has not fought a war in more than 200 years, but its military has taken part in United Nations peacekeeping missions in several conflict zones, including Iraq, Mali and Afghanistan.
