The U.S. strike followed Tuesday's gruesome chemical attack in the town of Khan Sheikhoun, where more than 80 people were killed.

"It added that the meeting's participants discussed "various issues related to the continuation of Russian air force operations in support of the Syrian army's anti-terror actions".

Meanwhile, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, an organization that monitors the war, said al-Shayrat airbase has been nearly completely destroyed. Initial reports said six were killed.

Major Jamil al-Saleh, a US-backed Syrian opposition commander, said he hoped the U.S. attack on a government air base would be a "turning point" in the six-year war.

After the Syrian government used sarin in chemical attacks on its own people two days ago, killing more than 72 people, Trump has swiftly changed his mind on Syria and is has dropped 59 missiles on Syria.

Late on Thursday, Syrian state television reportedly condemned the "US aggression against Syrian military objectives".

The office of Syria's President calls the strike "reckless" and "irresponsible". He also asserted that Assad 'choked out the lives of innocent men, women, and children'.

"Iran. condemns use of chemical weapons. but at the same time believes it is risky, destructive and violation of worldwide laws to use it as an excuse to take unilateral actions", ISNA quoted Bahram Qasemi as saying. "I don't expect there will be any military escalation", he said. There can be no dispute that Syria used banned chemical weapons, violated its obligations under the chemical weapons convention, and ignored the urging of the United Nations security council, ' he said. As a result, the refugee crisis continues to deepen and the region continues to destabilize, threatening the United States and its allies.

"An air commodore was among the four soldiers killed", the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.
