Steve Bannon dropped from NSC principals

Bannon was a controversial pick for the council, and according to the administration, was only placed on the council to help Trump control then-national security adviser Michael Flynn [official website]. Bannon will, however, still retain his security clearance.

Flynn's replacement, Lt. Gen. H.R. McMaster, was allowed to reorganize the NSC as he saw fit.

While Vice President Mike Pence told Fox News later that day that the move wasn't a demotion for Bannon, it would appear he didn't feel the same way.

"You have these NY interlocutors who are just not political and who want to think that they're above the way Washington thinks, but if anybody is allied on delivering on things that Trump ran on, it's Bannon and Reince and the vice president", said the Republican who has spoken to Bannon recently. He cited President Barack Obama's national security adviser, Susan Rice, for why he advocated a change. He is now in charge of the both the National Security Council and the Homeland Security Council headed by Tom Bossert - a reversal from earlier in the year when both the NSC and HSC were put on equal footing.

Trump's White House is facing allegations that it funneled secret intelligence reports to a Republican congressman leading an investigation into his campaign's possible ties to Russian officials as well as Moscow's interference in the 2016 election.

So in stepped Mercer, daughter of hedge-fund billionaire Robert Mercer and who goes way back with Bannon, to convince the strategist of the "long-term play", Politico reported.

A USA official confirmed that Ezra Cohen-Watnick had access to those kinds of intelligence materials, but maintained he did not play a role in helping the congressman gain access the documents. He actually said 'cuck, ' as in "cuckservative, '" the administration official told The Daily Beast.

However, CNN's senior White House correspondent tweeted late Wednesday saying Bannon was, in fact, in the Situation Room despite being removed from the NSC.

The president's chief strategist, Steve Bannon, was removed from the council, while other members of the executive branch were elevated to the advisory group.

As secretary of energy, Perry has responsibility for the nation's nuclear weapons program and radioactive waste disposal. Also by law, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and the national intelligence director are advisers to the council.

Bannon insisted earlier Wednesday that his exit from the committee was planned, calling it a "natural evolution", and not a reduction of his stature inside the White House, The Times reported.
