S. Korea test fires 800km-range missile

The launch Wednesday into waters off North Korea's east coast came shortly before U.S. President Donald Trump's first meeting with Chinese leader Xi Jinping later this week, raising speculation that it might have been timed to get their attention.

Trump has said China must do more to pressure North Korea to halt its nuclear program. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying said Wednesday that all sides needed to be involved.

Sources in the defense ministry told Yonhap news agency on Thursday, local time, a "Hyunmoo-type ballistic missile" was successfully tested at the Anheung test site of the Agency for Defense Development. When conducting nuclear and missiles tests in recent years, it has cited what it calls increasing US military threats.

China maintains that the nuclear issue is one between North Korea and the U.S., and China is doing its part by enforcing United Nations sanctions against Pyongyang and calling for dialogue to resume. Defense Minister Han Min-koo reportedly inspected the launch and the missile was said to have met all requirements for a normal test - including flight and accuracy.

North Korea often responds to the drills with its own military training and harsh rhetoric.

Dr Bong Young Shik of Yonsei University's Institute for North Korean Studies said the USA has made clear it will not soften its stance towards North Korea.
