New day in Cubs-Cards rivalry

He served as the Dodgers team reporter for ESPNLosAngeles.com. through the 2015 season.

Molina, going back to his outstanding World Baseball Classic, seems like a new man this year. He has also covered colleges, including USC football and UCLA basketball.

Prior to Sunday, the last home win to come on Opening Day for the Cardinals was in 2003. He was eager to shine in his and the Cardinals' first opportunity to show that they're already exhausted of looking up to the Cubs. Addison Russell apparently wasn't on second base when he took Javy's relay throw, but the call on the field was "out" and it stood on review.

Not much went right for NY once play began. The Cardinals aren't listening to prognosticators.

"It makes it more exciting", McQueeny added.

Shortly after eviscerating the Cubs' lineup with a fastball that brushed triple digits and a changeup that bordered on sadistic, Carlos Martinez didn't mince words. "All Cardinal fans have been very hospitable to us".

"I always like my team, " Matheny said.

During last year's playoffs, the Cubs learned firsthand about the elements of chance and randomness, the value of a few inches here or there. I realized it was the sign, because he was getting out of the box and I still couldn't see the ball.

Martinez absolutely dazzled the World Series champions Chicago Cubs, leading the Cardinals to a 4-3 victory in front of a frenzied sellout crowd of 47,566 at Busch Stadium. That is a stunning realization for their fans to live through, the wrong side of history. The Cubs lost that game 4-3 in 10 innings, but the 2008 season wound up with 97 wins.

The Cardinals appeared to put the game away in the eighth inning when Grichuk hit a two-run homer off Pedro Strop, making it 3-0, but Contreras' blast gave the Cubs hope, for a short time, at least.

By now, most people know how much young talent the Cubs have stockpiled.

Martinez, who already has established himself as one of the finest young pitchers in the game, looks as if he's vaulted his game to the next level. This is Piscotty's third season with the Cardinals.

"That was puzzling for us - there are going to be days where you don't have great stuff, but usually because of his command, he can find a way to get through it", Yankees manager Joe Girardi said. "Today, he didn't have his command either".

He said in spring training that he thought his command was ahead of where it was at this point previous year.

For the first time in Major League Baseball history, a starting pitcher hit two home runs on Opening Day. It was just, hard to believe, I guess.

It was a great night for Grichuk, who had earlier smashed a two-run homer to right field in the eighth, putting the Cardinals 3-0 up.

Before starting the game, he knelt at the back of the mound and wrote No. 18, Taveras' old number, and No. 30, Ventura's old number, in honor of his two close friends. "So, hopefully, I'll be on top. It was fun. Obviously there's irony in that, but it was fun for us to be out there again".

Derailed by a terrible bullpen last year, the Giants started this season the same way - even after trying to solve the problem by bringing in Melancon on a $62 million, four-year contract. "The first day we walked into spring I sensed it", manager Mike Matheny said. This team never gives up. They certainly should expect nothing less from the Cardinals, who are used to being the alpha males in the National League Central and to pummeling the Cubs throughout the generations.

This is one of the rule changes in an attempt to speed up the game of baseball.
