St Louis Cardinals Major League Baseballer Stephen Piscotty was assisted off the diamond after being hit a remarkable three times by errant Chicago Cubs throws in the same inning. He was hit again by Contreras' throw when he stole second. Trying to glove Wong's soft grounder that was ruled a hit, Baez bobbled it, enabling Stephen Piscotty to score from second on a hustling play.
Baez's wild throw home struck Piscotty in the left ear, rendering the sellout crowd of 46,760 silent for a few minutes as Piscotty lay behind the plate. He eventually walked off the field.
St. Louis fans still boo Heyward, who helped the 2015 Cardinals win 100 games with his all-around play and then made the personal and professional decision to chase that first World Series ring with the Cubs.
"I've never seen that before", Piscotty said Wednesday. Addison Russell doubled and scored on Jason Heyward's single to center. He opened the season on the disabled list for the second year in a row after suffering a sprained pitching elbow during spring training.
The Cardinals are 1-1 on the season after splitting the first two games with their division rival.
Ben Zobrist was out of the starting lineup, something manager Joe Maddon said had less to do with early rest for the 35-year-old and more to do with getting Almora in the lineup. "It works out a lot of the time". Given the day off, Piscotty should be fine for Thursday's series finale. Veteran John Lackey (0-0, 0.00) will likely still take the ball for the Cubs and will be opposed by Lance Lynn (0-0, 0.00).
