Courtois' poor clearance dropped to David Silva 30 yards from goal and, while the Belgian managed to save his effort, he could only parry the ball to Aguero who fired in the rebound.
City grew into the game, starting to see more possession but they needed a blunder from Chelsea keeper Thibaut Courtois to get back into the tie.
Eden Hazard scored twice in the first half, sandwiching an equaliser by Sergio Aguero, as Chelsea returned to winning ways following Saturday's shock 2-1 home defeat by Crystal Palace.
Two goals from Eden Hazard ensured title rivals Tottenham were denied another opportunity of cutting the Blues' lead for a successive game.
"For this reason, we must be focused and try to win six games".
"Regarding our position, it will be a fight until the end for us", Kompany added.
Vincent Kompany wants Manchester City to finish the season on a high by securing Champions League qualification and reaching the FA Cup final.
"I don't know if the way we played was handsome but the most important thing is to win games", Hazard told BT Sport after being awarded the man-of-the-match award.
Arsenal made up ground on the Reds with a 3-0 win over West Ham at home, while Southampton came from behind to beat Crystal Palace 3-1 and Hull City won a relegation zone clash with Middlesbrough, defeating the Teesiders 4-2.
Conte said: "Tottenham could win eight games".
"We created chances to win. I'm optimistic. It's been like this all season, but in the boxes we are not good enough".
After the midweek games, Chelsea are still on top of the table now with 72 points while Liverpool are third on the log with 59 points, one point above Manchester City who now occupy the fourth spot.
The Blues are on fire this season under the Italian and boast a seven-point lead at the top of the Premier League.
Conte's team were back in front after 35 minutes when Fernandinho conceded a penalty with a foul on Pedro.
"I don't always complain like at Arsenal in the last minute, whether it was a penalty or not, but today it was a penalty".
"I'm a lucky guy to be the manager of this club and especially these players", said the Catalan, whose side drew 2-2 at Arsenal last Sunday.
