USA public fears of China diminish: Pew poll

As Trump and Xi prepare to discuss weighty topics such as trade friction and North Korea, Trump's golfing image problem - coupled with Xi's lack of interest in the sport - suggests the two men need to find another connection - presumably something visually appealing but not too physically demanding.

Mr Trump's national security aides have completed a review of United States options to try to curb North Korea's nuclear and missile programmes.

U.S. Ambassador Nikki Haley made the announcement Monday saying the April 28 meeting will be an important follow-up to this weekend's talks between President Donald Trump and China's President Xi Jinping at the U.S. leader's Florida resort.

"If these disputes are based on actually unfair trade practices by other governments, such as export subsidies or dumping. then solving these disputes could help restore competitiveness for U.S. goods and therefore, eventually, reduce the trade deficit".

HORSLEY: The U.S. -China relationship has already changed since Trump took office.

The Information Technology & Innovation Foundation (ITIF), a think-tank whose board includes representatives from Apple, IBM Google and other tech heavyweights, has urged the Trump administration to pressure China to "stop rigging markets".

The Chinese president rarely strays from jargon-filled scripts and has no presence on any global social media platforms, many of which - including Twitter - are blocked in China by his internet censors. "It's not yet clear whether. this is a White House that wants to fundamentally reset the terms of the relationship or tinker at the edges and declare a public relations win", said a China expert at a Washington business lobby who asked not to be named.

There is a certain degree of consensus within the USA expert community regarding a list of disappointments with China, both in its domestic and foreign policies.

For example, in 2012, 61 percent of Americans told Pew that the huge United States trade deficit with China was a "very serious problem" but only 44 percent do so today. I suspect President Trump thinks he's going to get one over on President Xi, so it will be interesting to see how that dynamic plays out.

According to AP, sanctions advocates in the United States believe that with just the right amount of pressure, North Korea can be coerced into giving up its nuclear weapons.

The White House declined comment on the NSC recommendations. China claims most of the resource-rich South China Sea, while Brunei, Malaysia, the Philippines, Taiwan and Vietnam also have claims on the strategic waterway. Critics within USA industry have accused China of unfair government subsidies to its companies, and of flooding the US market with cheap products from steel to solar panels, while restricting foreign investment over vast swathes of the world's second-biggest economy. In the past, a dominant view of China embraced the assumptions of liberal internationalism: that USA engagement with China would inexorably draw it towards free-market capitalism and more liberal domestic governance. But on the other hand, it may also hinder Beijing's effort to bring Pyongyang back to the table.

"They haven't used that influence, and so it's hard for me to be optimistic with that".
