Missed call helps UNC in final minute of NCAA title game

This time, the North Carolina got it right. Six years later North Carolina gives a challenge to that title but it doesn't matter because both teams are called national champions.

There will be no heartbreak for the North Carolina Tar Heels this time.

Gonzaga has 7-foot freshman Zach Collins, who had 14 points, 13 rebounds and six blocks in the Final Four win over SC. "That's tough to hear". During the ACC Tournament last month in Brooklyn, Williams told reporters: "You know, our president tweets out more bulls- than anybody I've ever seen".

That wouldn't be fair to the North Carolina fans who just want to celebrate their team winning its sixth national championship by beating Gonzaga 71-65 on Monday night.

Kennedy Meeks and Isaiah Hicks will each close out their four-year journey as Tar Heels with a national title.

The whole trail to here, to outscoring Gonzaga 8-0 over the last 100 seconds for a last-jolt win, had been riddled with harrowing views and hairpin escapes.

Their 71-65 win will not be mistaken for a work of art.

Joel Berry II will make that trade any day. "The ups and downs that we've had, it's all worth it. It's all worth it". The Tar Heels lost to Villanova last season on a last-second shot by Kris Jenkins.

"I'd say this one is probably more special because it's been a journey for the last three or four years", Williams said.

Justin Jackson delivered the go-ahead 3-point play with 1:40 left. He had nine points and seven rebounds but fouled out with 5:03 to play. 35 (Arkansas), 25 (Butler), 10 (Oregon), 4 (Kentucky) and 1 (Gonzaga) according to the ratings of college stats guru Ken Pomeroy.

The official was right there standing over the play.

But there was no protest, no review.

"Almost never saw Mark during the game tonight, because I don't focus on the other coach".

"It's an incredible game", Williams said afterward during an interview with CBS. Karnowski finished with four fouls in 29 minutes while Collins fouled out in the second half after 14 minutes of action. They brought steady cascades of boos from the crowd of 76,168, as fans from each side took turns protesting the whistles. Legitimate comparisons were being made to the infamously bad 2011 title game in terms of unwatchability.

"The (officiating) was a little rough, but at the same time, you have to fight through it", said North Carolina junior wing Theo Pinson. I don't think either team played very well.

Berry bounced back from a 2-for-14 shooting performance against OR on Saturday to make seven of 19 shots against the Zags in an ugly, foul-filled game.

Some of the culprits: Berry led the Tar Heels with 22 points but needed 19 shots to get there.

Jackson scored 16 points, but missed all nine of his three-point attempts. This was the Bulldogs' first Final Four appearance.

Moments later, Williams-Goss twisted his ankle and neither he nor anyone on his team would score again. "You learn how to do one thing your whole life, and then get called for a foul", Collins said. "Now I'm saying I hope it's over with before I die". Williams his third, as a head coach. While Williams took the Tar Heels to visit President Obama at the White House in 2009, he reminded reporters that no invite was extended when they won it all in 2005. "And he calls me his mentor or one of his mentors, and that's a pretty damn neat thing". I swear to goodness, that's not what I'm thinking.
