Indiana stresses work zone safety this week

The South Dakota Department of Transportation wants to remind motorists to drive safely through work zones.

"A lot of times when traffic gets cued up people start rubber necking next thing you know when they look up there's a vehicle in front and they'll veer into our construction zone", Poppe said.

It's the time of year when construction crews and orange barrels spring into action, and that means driving through work zones.

MnDOT works to alert motorists in work zones and sets speeds that are safe for navigating through it.

IDOT District-8 Acting Project Implementation Engineer Lora Rensing says her agency will be installing more portable rumble strips approaching work zones, adding photo enforcement vans and expanding smart work zone technology. 17 people were killed and 75 people were seriously injured.

Past year in MI, there were 4,908 work zone crashes and 17 people lost their lives.

"The Department has experienced first-hand the devastation that can occur in a work zone", NMDOT Deputy Secretary Anthony Lujan said.

National Work Zone Awareness Week is sponsored by the Federal Highway Administration to bring national attention to drivers and worker safety and mobility in work zones.

He also stressed the importance of slowing down in work zones and obeying the posted speeding laws.

Officials told Action 2 News the majority of work zone crashes happen because of distracted driving.
