Milwaukee's Junior Guerra left his first opening-day start in the big leagues after three innings with a strained right calf, grimacing as he broke out of the batter's box after laying down a bunt.
"It kind of starts the process of what we've preached in spring training".
Milone was one of a group of seven starting pitchers competing for five rotation spots heading into camp, but after being hit hard in his last two outings was told he'd begin the season pitching out of the bullpen.
"I thought Greg threw the ball well and I think that's the best velocity he had all spring", manager Bud Black said, noting that Holland's fastball hit 95 miles per hour on the radar gun.
On the other side, the Brewers are 5-1 in Guerra's last six starts during Game 1 of a series, are 4-1 in his last five starts overall and have won five of their last six against National League West opponents. "We'll have more clarity".
MILWAUKEE NOTES: After receiving a three-year, $16 million deal over the winter, Eric Thomas will hit second today against the Rockies, who will start Jon Gray.
Thames, who scored the go-ahead run on a double by Travis Shaw, said that inning was an indication of the team's quick-strike ability on offense. "It just shows how the team comes together, to string together those hits".
The Brewers looked like they were going to come back in the 8th inning when Rockies reliever Adam Ottavino walked Domingo Santana and Keon Broxton. The Brewers were dealing with the worst of times for their inaugural game of 2017, and the crowd only could chew on a brat.
To make matters worse, the Brewers' defense botched a couple key plays, allowing Colorado to regain the lead 6-5 with two runs in the seventh. In five innings he utilized five relievers, who permitted one measly hit and no runs. Villar, moved to second base with hopes that his skill set would help avoid the 29 errors he made on the left side of the infield last season, made an errant throw in the ninth that led to Colorado's final run.
"He didn't turn a double play that we needed to turn, certainly", Counsell said of Villar's misplay. "But it's a long year".
One game a season does not make, and not all of Black's strategies will work going forward.
Footnotes. Charlie Blackmon recorded his first hit at Miller Park in 11 career games.
