Woman douses suspected carjacker in gasoline

A woman was pumping gas when a man, identified as William Tighe, 32, jumped into her vehicle.

A woman was captured on video attempting to fight back against a carjacker by dousing him with gasoline before she was dragged several feet as the man stole her vehicle while she was pumping gas.

Video released by the Tewksbury Police Department shows a woman pumping gas at the Circle K around 7:25 p.m. Saturday.

Officers later found the auto abandoned in Lowell.

Police identified the suspect as 32-year-old Tewksbury resident William Tighe.

William Tighe is now wanted on an arrest warrant charging him with carjacking and assault and battery with a unsafe weapon, according to police. She was taken to a hospital as a cautionary measure, but police say the injuries appeared to be minor.

The suspect is described as a man wearing a dark jacket with a hood and jeans.

Tighe was charged in Woburn District Court in December 2014 with auto theft, assault, assault with a risky weapon, and resisting arrest. In December of 2014 he was arrested by Burlington and Bedford police after allegedly leading police on a high speed pursuit through both towns in a vehicle that was reported stolen from Lowell.
