Therefore, it's important that Oculus and Samsung manage to entice developers to build compelling software for the controller, in order for the companies to avoid the chicken/egg situation of poor developer support leading to poor adoption and so on. The new Gear 360 is also shaped much more ergonomically than the previous generation without the need of a tripod to allow for it to stand up on its own, and with a much smaller footprint. The new Gear 360 (2017) also sealed the battery inside the device rather than making it removable.
He said the standalone headset was "still under construction", and so couldn't reveal whether the device will be wireless or require a physical connection to a PC. Samsung provided us with a 32GB memory card and at the current settings that yields over 2 hours of 4K footage, 10,000 15 Megapixel photos, three hours of 1/2 second time lapses, three hours of 5 minute video loops and over 10,000 HDR landscapes.
The new headset will come with a Google Daydream-style motion controller. Users will be able to live stream 2K video directly to Facebook, YouTube and Samsung VR when paired with any compatible smartphone. As mentioned above the Gear 360 also offers greater compatibility with iOS devices including the iPhone 7, iPhone 7 Plus, iPhone 6s, iPhone 6s Plus and iPhone SE, as well as Windows and Mac computers.
Samsung has given an ostrich the ability to fly with the power of virtual reality. While some good titles have been added over the past couple of years, we mostly see the Oculus Store proliferating with low-quality experiences, versions of mobile and arcade-influenced games that do little to reflect the capabilities and unique qualities of the medium.
In the meantime, Samsung will continue to ship its own GearVR, which uses Oculus Home on the software side. So if I were planning on spending a weekend in Bear Grylls's company, this would be an ideal smartwatch to wear.
