Defenders Chris Smalling and Phil Jones suffered "long-term injuries" while on duty with England, says their Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho.
West Brom have avoided defeat on three of their last four trips to Old Trafford.
United will be without at least six first-team players for Saturday's Premier League game against West Bromwich Albion as Smalling and Jones join midfielder Paul Pogba on the treatment table while Mata begins his recovery from the operation.
For the Baggies, Matt Phillips (hamstring) and Gareth McAuley are both doubtful to feature but apart from the duo, Tony Pulis will have a strong squad to choose from.
Kick off is at 15:00 on Saturday April 1.
Jose Mourinho's men are now in fifth place in the table as they look to try and secure their place in Europe's elite club competition for next season. Finally, I note that Manchester United, along with Middlesbrough, remain the two teams that most often in the course of this season played a draw (10).
Nacer Chadli is an injury concern for West Brom.
West Brom was the eighth side to leave Old Trafford with a draw this campaign, joining the likes of Hull, Stoke, and Burnley in defying United.
Jose Mourinho faced the press this afternoon, ahead of his side's next Premier League outing, and he had an apology for departed midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger.
Foster thwarted his old club again with a fine one-handed save from a Rashford thunderbolt from 25 yards, as Mourinho introduced record goalscorer Rooney in the hope of finding a late victor.
Reaching 50 points for the first time appears to be a realistic target, even if West Brom still has Manchester United, Liverpool, Chelsea and Manchester City left to play.
The injuries will come as a big blow to United's hopes of finishing in the top four as it leaves Mourinho will limited options in the middle of his defence as we head in to the business end of the season.
