Kuchler said he witnessed the crash and afterward checked on both the bus and the truck.
"The only thing he said to me is, 'I'm sorry, I was texting, ' and he asked for help", Kuchler recalled. I was texting.' I said, "Son, do you know what you just did? He said, 'I'm sorry I'm sorry'".
Kuchler said he continued following the pickup truck but he also called the sheriff's offices for both Uvalde and Real counties.
Uvalde police Lt. Daniel Rodriguez says a man called about 12:02 p.m. Wednesday to report the swerving truck heading north on USA 83 and to ask deputies to respond.
Kuchler then said he spoke to the driver following the crash and that in their exchange, he admitted he had been texting at the wheel moments before.
Highway 83 in Uvalde County was closed for several hours after the crash.
Kuchler said that in the chaos he recalls the atmosphere as a few people clinched onto life inside of the bus.
The group of senior adults from First Baptist Church of New Braunfels, Texas, was returning from a retreat when the crash occurred, a church statement said.
Young remains hospitalized after the deadly crash. Deputies were dispatched, but Rodriguez says the same person called back less than 30 minutes later to say the truck crashed.
The accident happened on a curve where the speed limit is 65, but the cause of the accident is still under investigation, authorities said.
However, Jennifer Morrison, the investigator in charge of the team from the National Transportation Safety Board, said Friday that distracted driving will be among the issues investigated.
"The driver, as well as his front-seat passenger, had standard, three-point seat belts".
Meanwhile, the New Braunfels community continues to grieve the loss of so many of their church-going citizens, friends, and family members.
My San Anotonio reports Young was airlifted to University Hospital in San Antonio where he is now listed in stable condition.
Authorities investigate after a deadly crash involving a van carrying church members and a pickup truck on USA 83 outside Garner State Park in northern Uvalde County, Texas on March 29, 2017.
The church members had been attending an annual spring retreat for people age 55 and older. "Preliminarily, at this time, it appears that most if not all of the bus passengers were wearing seat belts".
Morrison said the collision occurred Wednesday when the northbound pickup truck apparently veered into the lane of the southbound bus in Real County.
