Modi to inaugurate J&K tunnel

"It will also help boost tourism", Singh told PTI. The tunnel will be crucial for the people in and around the state since it is likely to save fuel worth almost Rs 99 crores a year.

The tunnel will reduce the travel time between the two state capitals of Jammu and Srinagar by two hours.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be dedicating the 9.2-km-long tunnel to the nation today at 3:00 pm. "We are providing the muscles and lungs for this critical new tunnel", CEO and Managing Director, ABB India, Sanjeev Sharma said.

Modi will also address a public rally at Battal Ballian in Udhampur district after inaugurating the tunnel.

The ventilation system will enable vehicle drivers access to fresh air while driving through the longest highway tunnel in Asia. The existing route between the towns of Chenani and Nashri passes through Patnitop and is prone to heavy snowfall and avalanches leading to frequent roadblocks and unsafe travel.

Situated at an altitude of 1,200 metres, the tunnel has traffic and fire control systems, video surveillance, FM connectivity and transverse ventilation systems.

ABB is a pioneering technology leader in electrification products, robotics and motion, industrial automation and power grids, serving customers in utilities, industry and transport & infrastructure globally.

The tunnel, constructed at a cost of Rs 2,519 crore, will ensure a safe and swift passage for commuters, even in adverse weather conditions.

As part of security the limited movement of traffic will be allowed on Srinagar-Jammu highway on Sunday in view of the inauguration. The time taken to build this tunnel is 5 and a half years.

A police official said that an unprecedented ground-to-air security has been put in place in Udhampur and around the tunnel. Three helipads have been sanitised and checked by security teams headed by the Special Protection Group, or SPG.
