For the second time this week, the Golden State Warriors have defeated the Houston Rockets to continue their stranglehold on the #1 seed in the Western Conference.
So just like that, the Warriors lead the Spurs by 3 1/2 games in the West with only seven games remaining. Steph Curry's and Klay Thompson's sharp shooting has returned, Andre Iguodala is playing like an All-Star, and Shaun Livingston and even JaVale McGee are chipping in.
Harden struggled in this one, scoring just 17 points on 4-18 shooting to go along with 12 rebounds and eight assists.
"We have six games left", coach Steve Kerr said.
Meanwhile, Kevin Durant has responded to calls from NBA commissioner Adam Silver for the association to become more involved with the resting of marquee players, arguing that the practice of teams allowing their star players to take time off had become an "extremely significant issue" for the league.
During the eight-game winning streak, the big question was if the Warriors could compete with the best of the best without Durant even though they had taken care of inferior teams. Entering the season, many were skeptical about Golden State's ability to protect the rim after losing Andrew Bogut.
Spurs: At Oklahoma City on Friday night.
With news that Durant is progressing better than expected and the Warriors playing their best basketball since losing him, it is looking like the Warriors will be fully healthy and as risky as they were before the Durant injury.
Averaging 31.8 points, 10.6 rebounds and 10.4 assists, Westbrook is trying to become the first National Basketball Association player to average a triple-double for a season since Oscar Robertson accomplished the feat in 1961-62. Every defensive possession ratcheted up with the intensity of a Game 7 moment. The reigning two-time NBA MVP then rediscovered his sharpshooting form and has led Golden State's successful run.
When the Spurs score 30-plus points in the first quarter they were undefeated coming into this game.
The lead swelled to 29-7 later in the period, and Spurs partisans inside AT&T Center were rocking the house.
So the Rockets are going to break all sorts of 3-point records. Will the Spurs win another over Golden State, or will the Warriors push themselves closer to the top seed? In the past, Tim would kind of settle us down, gather us together, and help us execute it better. Then instead of digging themselves out by canning impossible 3s in ridiculously short-spanned flash runs, the Warriors reverted back to the team that won the title two seasons ago.
Golden State made it 10 wins in a row with a 107-98 victory at home to the Rockets on Friday. But he connected on just five of 20 shots from the field and was one-of-nine from three-point range.
The tides didn't totally flip the Warriors' way until very late in the game.
Sparked by Danny Green's three 3-pointers, San Antonio jumped out to a 15-0 lead in the game's first four minutes.
