Carrie Fisher and Debbie Reynolds remembered in public memorial service

The Star Wars actress passed away on December 27 from the effects of a cardiac arrest she suffered on a flight from London to LA.

Liza Rios-Proprofsky from Orange County, California, said she was a huge fan of Star Wars actress Fisher and she wanted to honour her with "like-minded people". Performances from the Gay Men's Chorus of Los Angeles and Debbie Reynolds Dance School were also done in honor of Debbie's incredible career.

Other highlights from the service which was attended by a number of Carrie and Debbie's close friends and family included a photo montage set to James Blunt's You're lovely.

Opening with an ode to Star Wars - the film that made Fisher a household name - a working R2D2 unit came on stage and mournfully beeped before parking next to a director's chair with Fisher's name on it. As with much of the ceremony, humor was sprinkle throughout the remarks.

Actor Dan Aykroyd, who was briefly engaged to Carrie in the late 1970s, spoke of their "trusted" friendship.

James Blunt, who was not in attendance, wrote a special song dedicated to Carrie Fisher.

Fans will bid farewell to Debbie Reynolds and Carrie Fisher at a public memorial service on Saturday, three months after the actresses died. Actresses Renee Russo, Anne Blythe and Beverly D'Angelo were among the stars who arrived before the ceremony's start.

Fisher, 60, an actress and writer who starred as Princess Leia in the original Star Wars trilogy, died December.

Todd Fisher, Reynolds' son and Fisher's brother, has organized the memorial featuring trademarks of the show-biz royalty family - singing, dancing and pets. "Her creativity was peaking, the Star Wars thing was obviously back in spades".

Two of Reynolds' dresses that she wore onscreen and her honorary Oscar were also on display.

Todd revealed he decided on a public memorial because his mother would have wanted her fans to be involved.

The memorial will be held at the Hall of Liberty at Forest Lawn Cemetery Hollywood Hills at 1 p.m. ET.

Carrie and Debbie had a joint funeral in January for family and friends: Carrie was cremated with her ashes placed in an urn shaped like a Prozac pill, and Debbie was buried along with some of Carrie's ashes.

"When Carrie died, my mother chose to change her plans a bit".
