Filibuster? Then what? Force the Republicans to trigger the so-called "nuclear option", which would reduce the threshold for Gorsuch's confirmation from a super-majority 60 votes to a simple majority of 51? When Democrats last held the Senate, they eventually responded to persistent GOP filibustering of Obama administration nominees by eliminating filibusters for executive branch jobs and lower court appointments.
This week's two Democratic announcements boosting Trump's nominee came as no surprise. Bill Nelson of Florida, and Sen.
"In case after case, Judge Gorsuch consistently sided with corporations over individuals, undermined women's rights, and failed to protect workers". There's also another very important issue that came up in a very negative fifth circuit opinion dealing with the designation of critical habitat under the Endangered Species Act that we really need to get before the court. We need a U.S. Supreme Court justice who will stand up for equal justice for all.
In March 2016, Obama nominated appeals court judge Merrick Garland for the seat, but his nomination never came up for a vote in the Republican-controlled Senate and expired when the 114th Congress ended on January 3.
The court has been operating with eight members since the death of Antonin Scalia in February 2016. He says President Donald Trump should just pick a new nominee if Gorsuch is blocked. The Judicial Crisis Network, spending the bulk of the money, on Friday said it is spending $1 million in Montana and three other states: The group hopes to win over Sen. "The only question is how, it's not even when". Joe Manchin, of West Virginia, and Sen.
Missouri Sen. Claire McCaskill, who says she is torn over how to vote, highlighted the dilemma for Democratic senators running next year in states that Trump won.
Neil Gorsuch has said repeatedly that he would adhere to the rule of law and respect the independence of the judiciary, but he has refused to address specifics on any number of issues.
"This vote does not diminish how disturbed I am by what Republicans did to Judge Garland", she added.
"There isn't a ideal judge".
As he tries to line up enough votes to block President Donald Trump's Supreme Court nominee, the Senate Democratic leader is strongly warning Republicans against changing Senate rules to confirm Judge Neil Gorsuch. "I am not comfortable with either choice", McCaskill wrote on Medium, a social publishing platform.
With her support for Gorsuch, Heitkamp joins her North Dakota Republican colleague Sen.
In turn, Democrats have mostly opposed Gorsuch's confirmation.
